I've had this kit for a long time and finally got the motivation to build it.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20312T3/boxart.jpg
First a BIG THANKYOU to jaykay640 for sending me all his reference pictures. 200 or so and they are excellent!! thanks Joachim! I hope you enjoy this build!
I have decided to do this progress thread following the order of the Tamiya instructions, therefore Step 1 is the basic engine. I replaced most of the original parts like the coil etc. with machined pieces. I also added all the fuel lines.

Nice kit, but man you built that engine fast.. Do you do anything other then build models..!! Great start, been looking for one of these kits to add to my increasing pile of F1 cars to be built.. In the year - 2060... :lol2:

Cool, Reuteman (or Villeneuve Snr) gets the Robrex treatment! :) How are the decals? Tamiya kits of this era were notorius for translucent whites. If S27/Cartograf printed a replacement decal sheet it might be worth looking for.

Hi,
looks very real so far.
2 questions: What material did you use for fuel lines?
Did you add some screws (?) or nuts above the holes, where those chrome air intakes are added or is it a very well painted kitpart? ?

Hi,
looks very real so far.
2 questions: What material did you use for fuel lines?
Did you add some screws (?) or nuts above the holes, where those chrome air intakes are added or is it a very well painted kitpart? ?
the fuel lines are made from clear bead & jewellery thread that I found in a craft store. I then made a mixture of Tamiya clear orange 20%, XF57 Buff 40% and the rest X22 clear. I dipped the clear line in this mixture and removed it to dry.
The bolts you see are Sakatsu items.
Thanks for the comments!

STEP 2
The next job was the gear box and rear brakes. I cut the calipers off the gear box and drilled out the attaching bolts to be replaced by Sakatsu items. I made the brake discs by machining the plates then cutting small pieces of plastic for the cooling fins. The pictures will show some other details I added.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20312T3/gearbox1.jpg
STEP 3
Next up was the instalation of the Gear Box to the Engine and also the Fuel Injection plate. 12 intake trumpets take a long time to make so I had a production line going.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20312T3/intake.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20312T3/intake1.jpg

I have never liked the metal filters that most company's offer, in fact I ordered the Acustion set but decided to make my own.

STEP 4 (sorry I forgot the rear brake ducts)
I drilled the kit items out and thinned them to better replicate the fibre-glass originals. Next they were sprayed with 'thick' white laquer to get a rough stringy finish, then I washed them with a brown ink.

My understanding is that TS49 is for the modern Ferrari F1 stuff so I would say TS8 also.

Yeah, I think ts-49 is for 1997 and onwards, so ts-8 would be the best choice.

Hi Rob,
yes the TS8 is the errari red recommended for early cars. TS49 is for lots of modern cars/bikes as its a more flero / tv friendly colour.

Yes thanks. I've already purchased a set for this. They are good decals, especially considering I will have to paint the white on the side and the IndyCals set comes with the red stripes seperately.

Master Robrex,
1st time for me on this forum to follow your amazing build.
For sure, most of what you're doing is far too advanced for my skills but i'm very eager to know how you're making those mesh air intake covers.
Maybe i could get some inspiration from your lessons and hopefully improve my models.
So please...

-1 The wheel nuts I made myself by drilling out some brass hex rod then tapping the thread. I then turned the entire hub assembly so the wheels nuts work. I now need to make a tool so I can fit the wheel nuts once the wheels are on (deep dish wheels !)
-2 I will make a 'how to' on the intake mesh....soon, I promise!
I'm driving myself crazy trying to replicate the rivets on the chassis at the moment....3rd time in the paint stripper!!!!
thankyou everyone for the encouragment and nice comments!

That is very good stuff robrex.....again :-)
I'm happy to see your putting the photos to good use!
For the tool to mount the wheelnuts: Take a plastic rod and drill it out to the wrench width size of your hex rod in the lathe. Then put the hex rod in the drill chuck and drive it into the plastic rod. That will make a nice internal hex shape and you have a plastic tool that doesn't scratch your wheel nut:-)
Keep it on! In addition to the mesh cover tutorial i'd like to see one for the trumpets as well btw!!! Haven't figured out how best to make those yet:-)

I know this update is lacking a bit of explanation for work completed so if you have any questions just ask?
Great work. I too am interested in a how too regarding the intake trumpets, and also what you are using for the small scale exhaust pipe and clutch springs?
Thanks

That is very good stuff robrex.....again :-)
I'm happy to see your putting the photos to good use!
For the tool to mount the wheelnuts: Take a plastic rod and drill it out to the wrench width size of your hex rod in the lathe. Then put the hex rod in the drill chuck and drive it into the plastic rod. That will make a nice internal hex shape and you have a plastic tool that doesn't scratch your wheel nut:-)
Great! I'll use that idea for the wheel nut tool! Thanks jaykay640

Ok, here is the method I use.

I just use the centre bit which has a nice bevel already perfect for the trumpets. Once done I made another tool with the correct curve and part each one off.
I hope that helps?
Moving on to the build update. The chassis was a real pain trying to get the right effect of both polished aluminium and also the rivets. First though, I seperated the side skirts from the chassis.

Next I primed the chassis and drilled the location holes for the numerous rivets!! (this was very time consuming!). I then individually glued glitter pieces in each location which was a great tip given to me by a local club member! He uses this technique to fantastic effect on military models!

Finally I cut apart all the suspension components then started putting it all back together. The front brakes were given the treatment like the rear ones.

I covered the seat in MFH adhesive leather and put in the PP seat belts.

Rob, everytime you post another update I think 'unbelievable it can not get better than this" then you go and post an even better one. You could stop right now with the car posed as if being built in the workshop and it would be incredible.
