I'm getting 0171 and 0174 codes, mostly when my 99 is not warmed up. I started troubleshooting, and noticed the the PCV is not very snug in the grommet--it takes no effort to pull it out.
Should the PCV be snug in the grommet, and could this be causing my codes? Thanks.

If the gromet is not snug to the PCV valve....you should replace it.
There is a lot of information on the codes you are getting at

Frostie... I had the same problem... wondering if it was snug enough. I asked a worker at Napa and he cut me a few inches of Fuel Line which made for a better fit. I don't know if it will still throw your codes though. Undahood

I had an issue with my groment with excess oil.. I now on every oil change pull my groment out and use dish detergent and clean it. Its still in good shape no cracks or dry rot so I did not replace it. After the cleaning everything is snug.. Hope this helps

I noticed my 2000 Windstar's PVC gromet was not hanging on to the PCV valve very well and my NAPA man had the replacement gromet instock for less than a dollar US as I remember.
It is cheap and easy to replace it.

As for the 171 174 I once thought that was my problem but turned out it was not it most likely the the isolator bolts and intake port seals. wiswind put the above link on it that shows you.....
