Possessed Windshield Wipers

The wipers on my 96 Windstar have become possessed!!! It started out by the intermittent part not working, if you tried to use it they would just be as if they were on fast. Now whenever I turn the switch on and try to turn them off it takes awhile before they finally shut off. Sometimes a minute sometimes a half hour!! I am thinking it is maybe the switch??? Any thoughts??

My 2000 SEL has this problem too but it is so infrequent that I don't worry about it. When I use any delay setting then try to turn it off, the wippers continue until I switch them to fast then off.

Sorry, I can't help you but if I do hear of something I will post back here.

Taibo, I might can offer you a lead on your model. Refer to the glove box manual, there you will find there are two relays dedicated to the wipers. I forget which does what ... but one may be failing.

Part of your problem sounds like the switch.....intermittent not working correctly.
The wipers not stopping when you turn them off....They are supposed to keep running after you turn them off.....UNTIL they are back at the bottom..... Perhaps...whatever is supposed to turn them off when they reach the bottom....is not working. Relay....or however they indicate that they are at the bottom.

Most wiper motors have a little contact in the (a follower) that's incontact with a metal strip which is on a gear inside the gearbox which is attached to the motor. If your wipers are not "parking" that is going to the bottom when you shut off the switch most likely this is the problem.

I think for this guys wiper problem is that the wiper motor is always getting power (stuck relay...??) and the follower isn't allowed to do it's job.

Thats what i was thinking, that the motor is constantly getting power and was leaning towards a relaay, but i am not sure where the relays are for the wipers. My other thought was of course the switch itself.
