the factory stero does not need to stay connected but it is a good idea to buy the relocation cable this allows you to use your stereo to change the security functions and reset to oil change light yada yada ...yeah i said yada yada

OOOOOO!!!! Relocation Cable !!!! Didn't know one of those exsisted. I just had to take my Alpine out and pop the OEM unit in to reset my Oil Life Light. I definitly Don't wanna do that every time the light pops on. Where can I get one, how much and where does it let you relocate the head unit to.

The oil change light can be reset by turning the iginition switch to on, not crank, and the acclerator to the floor three times within 5 seconds.

most stereo shops will be able to order it just explain what you have and what you want the only one i have seen allows relocation to the trunk well it's long enough to relocate it to the trunk but i'm sure you could put it any where you wanted

wel the radio doesnt control it, it allows you to change it. all those settings get sent to the BCM and it remembers evrything, so if you go to take out your radio, amke sure you have all your setting where you want them because once you take it out, they will stay how you had them and you cant change them unless you put the stereo back in or relocate it.

Check out the info here. I wish a mod would make one of these damn posts sticky, so that people who forget how to use the search button would at least be able to answer some of their own questions.

As per the owners manual on my 2002 Impala with an RDS radio, and I quote,
"Using the Accelerator Pedal
1. Turn the ignition to ON, with the engine off.
2. Fully press and release the accelerator pedal three
times within five seconds.
If the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message flashes, the
system is reset. However, if it stays on, it did not reset.
You’ll need to repeat the reset procedure."

yeah in my manual for my loaded LS, it tells you how to do it thru the radio, but then it also says if you dont have the type of radio to do it, you can do it the other way. so maybe the pedal way works on any of them. I know many times on other cars ive tried doing pedal tricks for things and I always fucked it up and it took me forever to get it right and to take. so maybe when you tried it it just wasnt in the time frame or didnt press the pedal far enough to hold it there or whatever it may be, but it might have just not took when you tried it?
I would think that the pedal tricks would work on any impala becuase you have to have the pedals to drive your car, so evryone has pedals, so evryone can do those tricks. if that makes sense.

Funny my owners manual for my 2003 makes no such statement. The only way it refers to reseting the Oil Life Monitor is through the radio. And the gas pedal trick will not work on my car.
Thats why I'm relocating my factory head unit to the trunk.

I have a 2003 base with an RDS radio and I got curious as this thread progressed. Since my oil light was on anyway, I decided to try it. It does work on the 2003 imps with RDS.
