Can the cat ping? If so, I will kill it

My car's issue's with pinging are getting outta hand. I've just had the timing belt, distributor, alternater belt, valves adjustment and timing adjustment done and the damn thing still pings like hell. I've tried increasing the octane up to 91, it did nothing. I've put fuel injector cleaner in it, hasn't worked. But can the cat. do it. My mom's 93 camry had a problem a few years ago with pinging and it turned out it was her cat. All the stuff inside had came loose. Is it possible cause I'm having a hard time believing her on this? Other than what I've listed, what else could it be? Could it be a warped head or bend camshaft or something? I'm getting almost insane with this problem.

Damn, well, unbolt your exhaust and see if that clears the pinging. If you can't tell and it doesn't help, then I'd say do a compression test, recheck the valves, and turn the stereo up louder.

Are you referring to the Honda tick. Every honda I have heard has a little tick to it. Also my cat rattles/buzzes, not really a ping. Try tightening your heat shield on your cat, thats what mine was.

A plugged up cat/exhaust will cause ping. The reason is backpressure. You can get air in but not out. You can check this with a compression guage. Remove the upstream O2 sensor and attach the guage. Should not be over 2 psi at 2000rpm. Do you also have no power in the upper rpm's?

Actually, I never really had much power in the upper rpms. I have raced an 87 crx si before and kept up considering I got the base model, but I noticed that after about 3000 rpm's, it just doesn't pull much anymore. I'll see that when I get my muffler replaced this friday, if they can put a cat on there as well. I'll keep you guys informed on what happens afterward.
Also, right around when i first bought the car, I read stories of how the heat shielding around the cat mostly comes loose and rattles on most civic's. So I bought some tightners to put around them. Still are on there.

Yeah, the Honda tick... even the hearing impaired can tell. Also, I have a sort of whistle... comes from the pulleys I think when my idle is relaxed (loppy cam... hard to explain)...
