I had 2 problems with my steering wheel. The first was it clunking, the second is it squeaks when I turn the wheel. (stopped or driving). It doesn't do this ALL the time, but most of the time. The first problem was fixed today...I installed the updated intermediate steering shaft. Easy install, not too badly priced. However, the steering wheel still squeaks. This noise is heard inside. Any suggestions?

is it a squeaking sound like it's not lubricated right...or is it more of a whirring, whine type sound? Once in awhile mine has a whirring type sound when you turn the wheel..the faster the wheel is turn the higher pitched the whirring sound becomes....and second, no, i have no idea what it is....

the whirring might be the pump. on all cars ive driven, if you turn the wheel all the way as far as it goes while turning, if you listen you can hear a whirring, but then you back off an inch and it stops. turning the wheel that much can end up hurting the power steering pump, so its never good to crank it all th way, just back off an inch, it'll still turn just as far. but since you hear it all the time, I would think about checking out the pump, it might be on its way out.

how much did it cost for you to take care of the clunking noise? and how serious of a problem is it? my steering wheel seems to have devloped a crunk in the last coupla days.

yeah, I know what you mean about turning it all the way in either direction. you pretty much hear that noise on all cars. what I'm talking about is if you turn it an inch or all the way. Does it at all angles.

again steering issues are common with the impalas, here is a link for an easy fix for the ISS. its the cheapest way to go about it and many people have had this quick fix last for quite a while.

I've had both problems with my Impala steering... The clunking is very common and is fixed by replacing the intermediate steering shaft with a new, updated design... Re-lubing the old ISS is only a temporary fix... The clunk will come back... I also had a high pitched whine while turning the steering wheel... It got progressively worse and at some points actually sounded like a combination whining and grinding noise... It was a bad power steering pump... Replaced the pump and all is good...

yeah what I posted is just an easy fix that is temporary, but some people have had that temp fix, last for over a year, but yes, you can get the updated ISS, but that will cost you more then just lubing it.
