1988 help

I just turn 17 and i got my dads old 1988 mercuy sable thats been seating in our yeard for 2 years. He said there last time he drove it it needed a strut and a voltage regulater. So i bought the strut for $40 and the regulater for $10 at AutoZone. I put it in with a new batter. The bell goes off when you open the door and the radio works, but the engine doesnt make a sound when i turn the key? He said it might need a starter. i can get one for $40 at AutoZone, but it will cost $20 more if i dont take in my core when i buy it? Anyways where is the core at anyone no? and is it really the starter in need or something else?

jump the two power terminals on the starter solenoid ( located on the inner fender) with the car in parkkey on and see if it cranks over. When they ask for a core, they mean that they want your old part back. your old starter would be the core. This also apply to parts like alternators, water pumps. They take your old one back to rebuild it. You will be getting someone's rebuilt core.
