My 2000 Saturn 1.9L sohc SL shows code P0440 Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction. The car has about 102k miles with no other major symptoms.
Any suggestions as to where I might look? My mechanic abilities are modest at best.
Thanks

Your Evap system is where you fuel vapors are stored until they are used. A code like that could be caused by a leak somewhere. I dont know where its located at in your car but check the hoses and use a vacuum pump if you have one to see if its working right.

Thanks for the info. I did not know what purpose the evap system had until now. My mechanic skills aren't great, but I can look for cracked hoses and/or a leak.

a loose gas cap is the most common cause of a P0440

Well, the gas cap cover was closed, but the gas cap was completely unscrewed. If that permanently clears the code that will be the simplest fix I have ever had.
thanks very much.
