2001 engine smokes at start up uses oil

Hope you can help My 2001 windstar has 58,00 miles. Ford replaced the upper intake manifold in May. Now the check engine light is on. Mechenic checked low erg flow said dptf sencor ?. The real problem is suddenly it started to smoke real bad at start up and started using oil. Fills the yard with smoke. Mech. changed the valve guide seals. He said guides are ok. Still smokes No smoke after it runs awhile. Mech said it is not rings hope he knows. Hope you have some answers. I will address engine code after smoking is fixed unless it is related. Afraid the oil will mess up new sensor etc. Thanks

Why was the intake manifold replaced? Was it leaking oil? Did you run out of oil?

Bad valve seals will cause smoke when the car is slowing down (throttle closed, more vacuum in engine, oil is pulled through the valve stem.

Bad rings will cause smoke during acceleration.

A bad intake manifold gasket (leaking on the inside of the engine)could
cause oil to be sucked in to the conbustion chaimbers and be burnt.

Thanks for the reply. I had a knock in the engine. Ford said it was a seperation in the upper intake manifold. It never leaked oil and it has never ran out of oil.They changed it with an updated /revised upper intake manifold. It worked great. Then suddenly it started to smoke. Once it started smokening at startup I had to start adding oil. I see no smoke except for a short time after start up.

You say they checked and it had low EGR valve flow. Was the problem found and was it fixed? Bad EGR will make you burn oil due to the engine not venting properly. If EGR is good and, as you said the intake manifold has been replaced recently, could it be a vacum problem?

Excuse my ignorance but what is it about the EGR valve that can cause oil to burn? The EGR introduces exhaust gases into the intake stream but doesn't really vent the crancase. The PCV valve vents the crankcase fumes. Just curious.

You say they checked and it had low EGR valve flow. Was the problem found and was it fixed? Bad EGR will make you burn oil due to the engine not venting properly. If EGR is good and, as you said the intake manifold has been replaced recently, could it be a vacum problem?

It runs perfect no miss rough idle or hessitation. The mech. said that he checkd the egr and looked for restriction in the tubing. but determined it had to be the dptf sensor. I may not have the letters right on the name. I fell that I shoud stop all the oil before I change it or I will ruin a new one. I also want to know more about an egr making it burn oil. Can it be an intake gasket or a vaccum leak and still idle smooth?

I am wondering about this too. It has no drivabilty problems or rough idle.

The DPFE measures the EGR flow. It is a common failure on These vans. It is a very easy fix. Takes about 15 minutes.

If it is faulty it should set a code and illuminate the CEL with codes 401, 402 and/or 403 (or something similar)

Problem fixed PC valve stuck open. If yours smokes check it. This engine runs fine with it stuck open just gets oil in the intake manafold.. Thanks

If the PCV valve stuck open, it probably would suck a great deal of oil out of the crankcase.

I have a 2001 as well that will be an issue you will want to check often like every oil change.. Use only motorcraft pcv valve if you look at a replacement it has a round hole and the plunger inside if you look at the motorcraft it has spacers around the plunger. I guess it lets a less amount of oil through the tube. Also clean your tube and rubber gromet were the pcv valve goes in. you can use carb cleaner for the tube and dish liquid for the gromet. Also were the tube runs to the throttle body use a hose clamp, you get no more oil around the throttle body area. hope this helps
