2002 Windstar - PO171 code

All,

I have 2002 Windstar. Here is the history:
- Several months back the engine light was on. Computer code: PO 171.
Autoparts store suggested replace Oxygen sensors. So, I replaced O2
sensors. Reset the light.
- Two weeks ago, engine light on again. Computer code PO 171.
Autoparts store suggested change fuel filter. So, I changed the fuel
filter. However, it's over a week. The light still on and code still
dispays PO 171.

My questions are:
- Any suggestion next step? What part need check/replace?
- Does PO 171 is common problem for Windstar? Or I am lucky.

Thanks in advance.

David

PO171 means that bank one is too lean, in other words not getting enough fuel. You could maybe perhaps get the injectors checked out, by I'm just guessing. Hopefully someone with more knowledge of this problem can help you. One thing though... don't let an auto parts store tell you what to buy to fix your vehicle. They are not as experienced as a true mechanic, and are there to make a sale. I'm not saying they are all bad or will all try to rip you off but you are better off getting a mechanic to diagnose the problem instead of a auto parts guy. I've found that most times when I had a code read on my van from an auto parts store they always say to buy new oxygen sensors, even if that has nothing to do with the problem at all.

Oxygen sensors rarely fail. The can fail...but rarely will be the cause of the problem.

There is a TSB for your van that addresses the problem that you are having....
A member posted some really good information an pictures.....
