Running on empty

What's the farthest you've gone while running on empty (gas light on)? I can't say i've ever really experienced it, seeing as I usually fill up when the tank falls below 1/8th-ish. Anyone ever gone over 50 miles?

EDIT: Anyone ever just plain run out of gas? :p

Probably about... 15 or 20 miles... not that far.

About 15 miles or so, but I've never run out of gas.

I've never had a gas light, but I've had some close calls before.

When mending a fuel leak on my Alfa, I managed to dump basically the whole tank of fuel onto the road - it had even stopped dripping (this is at the base of the tank). Didn't have a jerry can nor another car, so I drove the car 3km to the nearest station and filled up (after everything was fixed, of course). Presumably the car only had what was left in the fuel lines...

I've discovered the Rover's fuel gauge is a bit inaccurate - when it shows ¼-tank, it's empty. Ran out of gas altogether twice now with it. Damn 11mpg cars.

Lets see...probably about 70 miles. Then put 13.5 gallons of gas in my 11.5 gallon gas tank. Thank god for the reserve.

I've gone till I had literally a few ounces left in the tank. In fact... I always do. I fill it up then run it out and count the miles everytime.

The lowest I ever got to was 3 miles of driving distance left before running out.

I've run out of gas 3 times, but EVERY single time, it's was immediately as I arrived home, so no big deal... never been stranded out of gas before.

I've never run out of Gas or tested my limits.. I fill up when I get to the half tank mark.. This Thread reminded me of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer takes out the Saab and wants to see how far He can go Once the Needle is on the Empty line..By the end hes holding hands with the Salesman cruising down the freeway.. :icon16:

With my car, I dont have a light, but I usually drive as long as I can with it in the E, so I have a pretty good idea how much I have. Well lately my odometer has been screwing up, sometimes hitting 100 miles and starting over, other times something totally random.

Last Saturday I was going to pick up some friends to take to a concert some other friends were in. They were doing So Cold by Breaking Benjamin for those that know. I drive to the campus from my house to pick them up, but while on the highway to the concert the car runs out of gas.

Long story short, a construction guy has a can of gas, we make it to a gas station, and make it in time to see the concert. Whew!

Between 70-100 miles on the E

I have run out of gas several times with my old truck. I was sure the gas gauge was correct, but apparently not.

The best time I ran out of gas ... I was turning at an intersection. The intersection was part way up an overpass incline at a 90 degree angle. If I turned left I went down the rest of the ramp, if I turned right I went up the rest of the ramp to the top of the overpass then down the other side where there was a gas station at the bottom.

Which way did I turn? ... you guessed it. I turned left and as soon as I got about 100'-0" I ran out of gas, coasting down the ramp. If I had turned right, I would have made it to the top, ran out of gas and coasted right into the gas station, next to a pump.

I was kicking myself walking the whole way to the gas station on the other side !!!!!! :loser:

A few miles at most. I usually fill up after the tank gets below a quarter.

Probably about 50-60 miles past. Once you know how far it goes, it's no big deal. I put in 17.496 (no joke) gallons in my 17.5 gallon tank once, didn't even realize it was that low.

Running on Empty is a good song by Jackson Browne......

Oh, speaking of, did anyone see that episode of Top Gear where Jeremy took an Audi A8 4.2 TDI on a 400 mile round trip and made it on one tank and at the end, he was literally running on nothing? THat was pretty impressive there.

It actually had more to do with the fact that the gas tank on an A8 is nearly 25 gallons.

I've gone 500 miles on a tank when it was pure highway driving (like 496 of the 500 miles were highway). The last 50 or so were on E but I made it.

I get about 360 miles in one tank of full gas. My E light goes on at 2.1 gallons before empty so I get around 54-60 miles left before empty. I have driven my car where it said on my dashboard the range I had left for gas was 2 miles.. so I have driven my car almost to no gas due to my 20 mile commute to school every friggin weekday...

Never run out of gas. There's a hot guy that works at the gas station up the road from me, so I visit as much as possible. I've lied about the thing not printing me a receipt just so I could go in and see him. It's sad.

But yeah, I have a gas light, but I never really even let it come on. I usually fill up at about 1/4 tank.

Correction - it was an 800 mile trip on a single tank... :D

I've bought 39.78 liters of gas for the 40 liter tank.

For you non-metric folk, that is a little less than a cup of gas left. :D

20 mile commute?!?! I drive 100+ miles round-trip, 5 days a week!!!!

Anyhoo, I have had the gas light come on in the Subaru, but I filled up at the next "affordable" station. I don't even know if the gas light works in the Infiniti. MOST of the time, I don't let the gauge get lower than 1/4 tank.

crazy. In my 1990 325is, I get the exact same mileage out of a tank, and my gas light comes on at the exact same time. Looks like BMW aims for a target.

My dad told me this story about how he once pulled into the gas station in his old '68 torino, and right as he was grabbing the key to turn the car off it sputtered and died. It was out of gas. :icon16:

I've run out of gas 3 times with my car. Because of that I have a realy good idea as to how far I can go before having to refuel. As a matter of fact I think that everyone should run out of gas just for that reason.

So long as you have a jug of fuel to get you to a gas station. :)

Only time I ever ran out was when the sending unit in my truck went bad and the gauge stopped working. Went to go out to start it in the winter and went to go take a shower. Come back out and it's not running, "hummm thats strange" won't start either, guess i'm outta gas. Peace-

First time I ran out was in the middle of farm land outside of Phoenix. that was a fun walk. Builds character.

I ran out of gas in my 65' GTO as I was merging onto the freeway. I didn't make it to the offramp. The gas gauge read 1/8 full too. I was heading to the other side of town to get gas because it was cheaper. I ran out of gas twice in that car because of the lieing gas gauge.

i've run out in a friend's car, on a track though. there were two of us in the evil-understeering honda, just as we passed the pit entrance it cut out...

my dad almost ran our retal car in spian out of fuel, he then drove into the petrol station an stuf about 14 litres of diesel in it (petrol car). as many times as i said you shouldn't drive with all that diesel in there he didnt listen, we then flew the thing back to the apartment at about 110mph, hoping if it cut out we could coast it a bit before starting to push it. cost about £400~$800 for the rental company to sort out the buggered fuelling system.

I used to run one of gas all the time on my work truck. It didn't have a working gas gauge. No matter though. I always had gas in the back of the truck. I got into the habbit of not worring about fuel level so much. That habbit bit me more than once in my personal car. Luckily my car only weighs about 2200 lbs, so I just kinda rolled/pushed it to the next gas station. I've driven it on the started a number of times as well.

I was transporting a car with my brother from Virginia to Colorado. The old VW Jetta's gas gauge was out and it had a small tank, so we were filling up every 200 miles or so. In the middle of nowhere, Kansas after more than 18 hours of driving, my brother was sleeping against the window. I started messing around, letting off the gas intermittently. Sure enough, he woke up wide-eyed since something was wrong with the car. I told him "gotcha" and he went back to sleep. Welp, about 15 minutes later the car did that on its own. He cracked an eyelid and told me it wasn't funny anymore. 30 miles from the nearest anything, it was my turn to be wide-eyed as I told him, "I'm not doing it this time".

Now we were both wide awake as the next exit crept towards us. We got off, and had to wait at the stop sign to turn left for the gas station. Not for traffice, but for the most rusted pickup we'd ever seen. The inhabitants of the pickup had probably 180 years between them, and we though we'd run out of gas right there. AFter forever, they finally pulled out and we were right on their tail. The station was about 1/4 mile up the road, but we didn't make it. We coasted to a stop just short of the turnoff, and pushed the Jetta about 20 yards to the pumps.

We figured that was pretty lucky, considering the scale of Kansas.

Mine comes on with 3-4 gallons left in the tank. If I drive easily, I can get 60-80 miles out of it. Drove home one day when it first turned on at school, that was 35 miles.

I have only ran out of gas three times, but when your gas gauge is broken, it's too be expected. :banghead: The first time I was just about a block away from work, so someone from work came and picked me up, and my roommate went and put gas in my car. Worked fine after that. The second time was I had just left my parents house, and they have 10 gallon tanks, so I was able to get some gas. The third, and last time, I was on my way home from another town, and I thought I had more in there, but I didn't. Once again, parents to the rescue. :p Well, I am going to get my gas gauge replaced soon, so that will cure that. Plus I know how far I can go on 1 tank of gas, so it's all good.:icon16:
