I have a 2001 Chevy Impala. It used to be a sherriff's car in VT.

My question is about getting a keyless remote for it.
Besides buying a keyless remote, do I also have to buy a receiver for it?
Are all Impalas keyless-enabled from the factory or do you have to pay someone to install the necessary receiver in it so that it will become keyless-enabled?

no its an option, so if it doesnt actually have it you would have to install the reciver and whatever mechanisms it takes to unlock the doors. im not sure what it all takes to make it work, but you might want to consider going to any chevy dealership or call them and give them your vin for the car and they shold be able to look up you car and see what options it does have. just becuase you didnt get a keyless entry when you bought the car doesnt mean it might not already have it. easier than buying everything just to find out that the car has it already.

Yup, a Chevy dealership parts department can run your VIN to see if you have the receiver installed. If you do, you only need to add remotes.

and actually if you are going to put it in your car this link will help. http://www.impalahq.com/ just click "how to" and look on the right side, 18 pictures down, you'll see a pic of a keyless remote.
