Problem: 92 Marquis 140K miles
1- Check engine light comming on and off.
2- Hard to start, takes 4 tries, then I have to let it warm
or it won't move. Hates the cold.
3- Even at highway speeds, check engin light will pop on and off.
Where do I go from here?

What kind of scan tool would I need? Is that something I can do myself?

A scan tool reads the computer codes, they are costly to buy, But from what I have heard on here and in other places, parts stores such as autozone will run a scan tool on your car for free.

Autozone only scans 1996 and newer.

Alright. If you have a shop manual for the car or any other ford pre 1996 it will show you how to read the codes via check engine light, only thing needed is a short jumper wire and simply count the amount of flashs to get the code #, Or you can just buy a plug with a light on it that will flash the codes for you, They are cheap most parts stores have them, I even seen them at walmart.

Thanks for the link. One question: does the check engine light show a number, or does one have to count flashes? The link doesn't really go into this.

You have to count the flashes.
