Steering issue (yep, another one)

2000 Impala.
Started off with a broken driver's side inner tie rod. Repaired and now (after having it aligned at Big-O Tires) the steering is sometimes power assisted, sometimes not. The few patterns are: It nearly always is unassisted when turning left, about half the time turning right, setting the tilt all the way up to the furthest from my legs seems to help somewhat, I can hear the fluid passing through the lines/piping while unassisted, the assist/unassist characteristics seem to be unaffected by speed/RPM.
Anyone have any ideas? I've searched the forums but didn't find my exact problem (whether or not others were describing it in as much detail or I'm not describing it enough :screwy: ).

What broke the the rod, possible hit a curb or something, may have damaged the rack.

my impala 01 is at the dealer for the 4th time....winding noise when making left turn...usually after a 'hard' stop...then noise can appear as i begin leaving from rest
have replace/lubed major parts (rod/shafts)....at times sounds like the front end will come off at any minute - :)
ideas?

Ran over a wheel (with attached tire) in the middle of the road at night. Not a donut...
That was several months ago. The steering issue didn't occur until the tie rod was replaced.

Hi, what you need is a new rack and pinion steering gear, unfortunatly they are crap on these cars and the symptoms you describe are tell tale signs.www.direct.ca/trinity/NHTSA-2000-gm-steering-complaints.htm-73-
