Transmission fell out

I have an 02 pt cruiser with 68k miles. My tranny went last week and I had a rebuilt put in by the dealer - I picked the car up on Friday. Today (Tuesday) after appx 80 miles, the transmission simply FELL OUT of the car!!! No warning, no nothing. Just an incredible BANG and there is was on the cement. It broke the axle and dislodged the motor. The motor is now about 2 inches forward and 3 inches downward on the drivers side. I had it towed back to the dealer, who is of course saying only what they legally need to say. Can anyone tell me if 1) They've ever heard of this happening? and 2) What other parts I should look at for damage. I pulled onto the emergency lane within about 20 feet of the initial drop, but want to make sure EVERYTHING is checked out. I am afraid the dealer may only do a quickie "fix it" as they will have to eat the total cost. Thanks for any help.

wow, I've seen that happen, many of times. In addition to your engine and axles being screwed, your going to have to have your suspension checked out, make sure you didnt' bend a control arm or busted a strut. In addition to that, you're also going to have to see if you suffered any damage to your body since the transmission is bolted to the body. I'd contact my insurance company & a lawyer and have them estimate the damage and go from there, you might have a legal case on your hands.

I can't believe it. I thought the mechanics doing some warrenty work on my caravan were bad when they forgot to tighten the rear oil seal bolts. But then they forgot to tighten the sterring rack bolts and my wife almost had a wreck.

Wow, Get a lawyer, I had to have my transmission replaced a while back at the Dealership, they way over charged me, and when I got it back I heard some strange noises going over a few bumps...when I got out of the car and looked under the car it was obvious the cross beam had not been bolted back on...opening the hood revealed many other missing bolts etc.
of course they had no great explaination how they could have my car for a week and return it to me with a bill unfinished.
I'm glad I caught it before it got as bad as yours though.
