crack in the head: defective engine

I purchased my 1998 SL2 brand new, have taken excellent care of it, and it only has 59,000 miles on it. Well, two days ago it started smoking from the exhaust and hood as i began driving, so I had it towed to my mechaniic. He told me it has a crack in the head, and yesterday morning he showed it to me.

It's a vertical crack (that he said HAD to have been there when I bought the car) and the pressure has finally built up enough to make it blow. I saw it start to spit oil when he turned on the engine.

He said "with 60,000 miles on it, Saturn needs to take care of this for you or it's JUST WRONG." I had it towed to the Saturn Dealership here in town yesterday and my mechanic even called them for me and told me exactly what he saw.

I spoke with a man there yesterday and he put in an e-mail to the corporate office but doesn't think they'll be able to take care of it because the car is a '98.

I said, yeah, but I live in TEXAS not Minnesota! The MILEAGE is what matters and that crack was there as a hairline crack when I bought it!

Actually, I could tell he sort of agreed with me, but he can't make the decision. So, I'm waiting to hear something today from their corporate office.

Ask me how mad I'll be if Saturn doesn't take care of this. :swear:

thats really crap..... ive been having problems with the saturn dealer here in windsor ontatio too, they definatly try and avoid fixing problems that are their responisbility, i hope you have better luck with them than i have had, but if you dont.. i have a friend who had a crack in his head on a 2001 SC2 and he got it welded for 150ish, and its held up for a few years now, so look into that if saturn screws you!

I hope you have better luck!! Amazingly, yesterday Saturn told me they would take care of it (like they should).

They are replacing the head at no cost. I think they ust be getting worried about their reputation.

I called my mechanic and thanked him profusely! I think having someone like that talk to the Saturn people really helped.

I hope your troubles with Saturn resolve themselves happily too!
