Aluminum by Audi: Lamborghini's L140, a.k.a. 'baby Lambo,' to arrive next May

Audi’s four-year-old ownership of Lamborghini will pay dividends for enthusiasts when the L140, also known as the “baby Lambo,” arrives next May. The Ferrari 360 Modena competitor’s aluminum spaceframe chassis will be constructed at the Audi Aluminum Center in Germany. In addition, manufacture and assembly of aluminum body panels will be farmed out to German coachbuilder Krupp Drauz.

Painted bodies will be shipped to Lamborghini’s plant at Sant’ Agata for final assembly. There, Lamborghini will install a mid-mounted 5.0-liter V10 producing in excess of 500 hp. The engine is linked to a six-speed manual transmission and permanent four-wheel drive. The car is expected to weigh less than 3100 pounds.

Lamborghini plans to build about 800 L140s in 2003, 1300 in 2004 and a maximum of 2000 per year thereafter. Sticker prices will be in the $165,000-to-$180,000 range.

Even better news? Audi reportedly plans to use the same floorplan and drivetrain for its future RSR sports car.
