Flickering brake light

I have a 1999 Sable LS wagon with about 110,000 miles on it. Last night, while I was driving home from a meeting, the parking brake light flickered on for just a second. This happened once before, a couple of days ago, but I dismissed it because it was so quick that I thought it was just a trick of the light, but last night it was quite clear. In both cases, it happened within the first couple of minutes after starting the car as I was braking lightly on approach to a stop sign. The brakes seem to be fine...there's no sense of pedal fade or anything else to indicate there might be a problem, and I haven't noticed any leaks. Any thoughts on what might be causing this? Should I be concerned?

I'm especially concerned as we're currently debating between selling this car or my 1994 Toyota Tercel. We're strongly considering keeping the wagon for its carrying capacity, so anything that might indicate a problem is a cause for concern.

Are you talking about the light on the dash? If so have you checked your fluid level.

On my 89 Taurus SHO, the return spring for the parking brake pedal is stretched out, letting the pedal droop a little. This caused the parking brake light to come on. My quick fix was to put a piece of double sided tape between the pedal and the metal stop that the pedal is suppose to ride against to keep it up against the switch until I can get a new spring. When I first noticed it, it was with light braking. Harder braking seemed to cause that pedal to slide against the switch, while the lighter let it fall away from it. That is, until the spring lost so much strength it never let the pedal touch the switch. Just an idea of something to check.

first off when was the last time you had your brakes changed? if its been a while you probably need to have them changed.. the break can stick on like that after the pads on the rotors are gone... and that usually means that you have been grinding your calipers too. which is very expensive to fix... but you may be lucky have your mechanic look at it.... it may also just need to have fluid added... or the brakes bled, because the air in the lines will make it stick on. either way it is all part of standard maintenance of a brake job... just have your mechanic check and if you need brakes done... id do it... or if youre a do it yourselfer do it yourself and save yourself about 200 bucks.... either way good luck!
