speed o meter stopped working

i have a 1995 sc2 , 5 speed , the speed-o-meter stopped working and at the same time the service engine soon light came on , where should i start looking ? ? ? thanks bob

assuming you can rev over 4000 RPM, the code is going to be 26, check your fuses. if all fuses are good, the wire between the speedometer and the PCM may be at fault.

fuses are all good , i found 2 - two wire connectors going to the transmission , one on the back side close to the shift cables and the other on top , i cleaned both with electrical connector cleaner and inspected , found no damage and the speed-o-meter still does not work , ? ? ? ? ? ? ? what to do

the wires on the back of the transmission are the VSS(vehicle speed sensor) they lead to the PCM, the PCM then feeds the speedometer, the wire between the speedometer and the PCM is most likely bad. its a darkgreen wire with a white stripe. http://www.saturnfans.com/photos/showphoto.php/photo/15885/

the speed-o-meter works , i sprayed the connector and sensor with electrical contact cleaner , and nothing , the car sat for two or three days and i checked the motor oil it was 2 1/2 quarts low , i fill the oil back up and the speed-o-meter has been working ever since . . . p.s. this is the motor i have to change because of all the oil it burns . .. thanks bob
