In Progress: Custom Ferrari 612 Skag

Got this kit from Veyron. His two 612 Skags were the inspiration.

I never have warmed to the stock Skag; looks a bit undercooked and needing some more character.

I've altered the roofline a bit to pay homage to the 456 and to also carry a bit of the design of the scallop into the roof. In the process, it helps to balance the C pillar over the center of the rear wheels...the cockpit on the stock version is pulled back too far, making it look ungainly and making the front end length seem excessive. I think that what I've done is working fairly well.

I stole Veyron's Viper hood concept, w/the exception that I filled the vents. I widened the hood a bit on the sides and have recontoured it a bit.

I tried a few sketches of the sides before coming up w/my favorite solution, a single fender vent behind the wheel similar to an RX-8, but faired into the scallop. I tried double vents a la 250 GTO, but they didn't look right. Triple vents were too much. The single vent simply looked the best. I still have to refine the opening and blend it into the scallop.

As for the front, I took an idea I saw in a magazine and opened up the corner vents so they didn't look so small and tacked on. The grille and vents will be mesh, no eggcrate. Headlight buckets will be black instead of body color.

So far I'm pretty happy w/the modifications. The Pegasus 23's I show look like they fit it pretty well w/o the car looking like a whip. The wheel openings are so big that 23's don't look goofy on it. It's still in the rough stages, lots of refinement to come. Hope you like it.

in my opinion it looks so much better than the stock scaglietti(no offense to Ferrari lovers, but i think it has to be one of the ugliest Ferraris ever). great job so far!

Thanks! White is a very strong possibility, however so are several other colors. I haven't decided yet. I have some Grigio Titanio that would look good on it, so would basic black or a metallic red, perhaps even Rosso Scuderia. We shall see. It won't be blue; I have an agreement w/Veyron to avoid blue since his Skag Stradale will be a shade of blue. We think :icon16: .

Here is a pic of mine in Nero Daytona Metallic, no clear or polishing on this pic:

 Thanks. BTW, I used to have a cat named Bondo, so I know my putty :icon16: . This will be there on Sunday, who knows how far along it will be.

I'd like to see it in a pearl white....

Well....let's just say pearl white is a bit feminine for this one  . I'm trying to add a bit of testosterone to the tepid styling. That said, plain old white looks very striking on any Ferrari I've ever seen in it. Including a 550 Maranello I saw on Sunday.

A stock Scaglietti might look good in pearl white. Especially if the stock Scaglietti is lowered a bit from it's AWD-looking ride height :uhoh: .

What about a pearl white with a steely blue tint to it? I realize there are 100's of shades of pearl white, and most factory colors I don't like...or, a rich burgundy might be nice...I dunno

Truth be known, I'm just not a big fan of pearl white-and it's a royal PITA to get a pearl white paint job to look right on a model-you have to go with big pearl flakes just to make it show up. Plus I'm staying away from blue colors since Veyron's got one going that is going to be blue. I have some Lamborghini Rosso Metis, which is almost identical to Honduras Maroon, which would look good. Also plain old Tamiya Mica Red would look great. However I've got a bottle of Cobra Colors Ferrari Grigio Titanio which I know will look sharp. My mood the day I paint it will determine the color :)

Yeah, that color is awesome. Mach I 2003 showed me a good example of the color this weekend on a C6 he's painting. Dunno if I'll do the Skag in red or not at this point, still leaning on Grigio Titanio and perhaps doing the pearl red on a 575 Maranello.

Here's some more progress. I primed it and did some filling, and reprimed to see where I'm at. So far so good, more sanding/filling/tweaking and it'll be ready for finished primer. I have to figure what I'm going to do about the skirts and air dam.

I've gotten some Cobra Colors Ferrari Grigio Titanio on it, so far looking good but there are a couple areas still needing attention. I do like the color on this car. BTW, the paint is very dull until it's covered w/clear, typical of a basecoat/clearcoat. The metallic pigment is a bit larger than I expected, I guess 'cause I'm used to shooting Lamborghini colors which have finer-ground pigments.

Absolutely Stunning!

That car was built to sport metallics.

Oh, I ve seen a pic of a custom coloured one, with the lower parts of the body (moustaches in the front, sideskirts, and rear part) all body coloured. I must say it looked superbly awesome.

As for the body modifications, it's just the way I like them, they re very much there, although not too much right into your face, tasteful in my book.

Slow progress on this one; I finally got the bodywork issues dealt with and first good coat of color on all the body pieces, and matched the wheel centers as well. I was going to do the lower chassis components black, but I'm glad I followed some suggestions to do them body color.

From here I'll blacken the panel lines, fog on a couple more thin coats of color, and then clearcoat. This steely-cool Grigio Titanio 612 will look pretty cool w/a black and red interior IMHO :sunglasse

Thanks for the comments so far! I've had some major problems crop up w/the clearcoat, the paint bubbled up in the C pillar area where I did some earlier filling. I'm almost out of paint, and I don't know what's under there trying to escape  . I guess it needs to sit in the dehydrator for a week or three :disappoin .

As for the wheels, I've done so many wheel swaps (and so have my friends) that I don't have any problem fitting them w/all the tricks we've learned over the years. As long as the wheels fit under the fenders, they'll fit the model  . It's as simple as fitting the brakes to the wheels and gluing them as separate units to the suspension spindles. Of course that has to be pre-fit before gluing, and the model has to be propped up w/cards to the correct ride height at all four wheels. With a Dremel, plastic or brass rod stock, shims and whatnot any wheel can be properly centered in the wheelwell.

Finally some decent progress. I had to repaint the body again, and I ran into numerous problems w/ghosting on the hood (where I filled the vents) no matter what I did. I had to strip it once, and repaint it...and just when I thought the ghosting was done with, it reappeared :disappoin

Unless I want to let this thing sit for six months...

In desperation I covered those areas with two pieces of SMS carbon fiber decals as a graphic treatment. If I wasn't so sick and friggin' tired of monkeying around with the damned lacquer problems, I'd have ground out the entire area and installed screen. I think it looks okay. Not too ricey.

The screened vents and grilles look decent, the paint buffed out fairly well, and I masked/sprayed the window trim. I probably won't install any side glass at all, so to see inside better. If I do side windows, it will just be quarter glass.

I didn't take a pic, but I stripped and painted the underhood surround satin black, and masked/painted the radiator area w/Alclad aluminum. Looks like it should now.

Thanks-I've had limited success w/sealers. I used Cobra Colors VX primer and Tamiya surface primer. I've had lacquer eat through properly-applied Variprime which everyone swears is a good sealer. I have some MCW sealer that does seem to work, but I didn't use it on this model. I was hoping the VX primer would work as a sealer, but I guess it didn't. The ghosting never appears until the clear is applied...and this hood is even clearcoated in Gunze Mr. Topcoat which isn't a lacquer, but it still did a little ghosting (very faint, but I could see it). Oh well. Perhaps if I hadn't been rushing this thing and let the primers and color coats gas out for weeks it might have been different, but I have zero patience left with this thing now. I just want it done

I'm sorry to hear about the ghosting problem. VX Primer is essentially VariPrime, which I occasionally have had ghosting problems with as well. In my case, every time I have was because I laid my paint over it too heavy too fast. The gray stuff I'm still tinkering with might prove to be more resilient.

One other thing worth noting - quick clearcoating with a non-lacquer clearcoat over automotive paint that hasn't fully gassed out could seal the paint and delay or prevent it from fully drying. That may be a contributor to the problem as well.

Anyway, the CF decals are an attractive fix for the problem. The model looks fabulous.

Thanks, I know that most if not all of my paint problems stem from the fact that I didn't allow enough drying time for the VX and the following lacquers-aka a total lack of patience and over-exuberance to see the following steps. The newly-stripped hood went from bare plastic to finished in less than 24 hours. I probably didn't have enough VX on the hood originally, but when I originally painted the model it was in primer for awhile (a week or so??) before shooting color. Even 24 hours in the dehydrator in the primer stage the second time around would have probably been enough to shrink things down to where a clearcoat over the color wouldn't have ghosted. The color goes down so thin, almost like Alclad, that it never seems to cause ghosting. But the clearcoat is another matter. I knew I was in trouble when the Gunze clear showed ghosting, because Gunze isn't lacquer. My basecoats were still shrinking

BTW, I sprayed Moon Mud primer on the hood (over VX) but after it was shot w/Acryl clear (I had done some filling over the vents only)...oh what a disaster...Acryl clear does not like having lacquer shot on it, the lacquer cracked...causing me to have to strip the entire thing. The Moon Mud primer does look very promising, it does build up faster than VX.
