I just saw the thread of this build you're doing and it's great!! Ferrari could have learned a thing or two from the rework you've done!

I vote for the hardtop look also.......that's one design element that's sorely lacking in 1:1's today, save for the super expensive makes.:disappoin

I had to look back to when I last had some proper work on this car...it was early September.

Since then the hood has caused me nothing but problems. I cut away the area that kept shrinking (filled slots on the Viper hood), basically the area I had covered w/C-F decals. This was supposed to fix the issues of bodywork. I machined a groove underneath to install (at a later date) mesh into the openings.

I reprimed, and repainted. Many, many times. Went through more than half a bottle of Cobra Colors Grigio Titanio :shakehead :banghead:

What happened is still baffling...basically after each attempt to clear (and once or twice w/the base coat, but never w/primer) the paint "bubbled" or blistered underneath in a few locations. Places that were not filled. As if the new soft Revell plastic not only causes crazing, but might actually leech something underneath a layer of paint. This only happened when I used a dehydrator, so it was a temperature issue with something under the paint. But this has never happened before this model. I had a few places on the body that had it happen (near areas filled w/tiny amounts of superglue), but after fixing once they quit. I'm still baffled; I have no idea what caused the blisters under the paint. I kept shaving them off to bare plastic, filled, spot primed, repainted. Many times. :crying: :angryfire

I nearly gave up, nearly smashed the model. On several occasions :shakehead

It happened again this week. Then I decided to try something else, I had already resigned myself a couple months ago I may have to do an entirely new hood. But I decided to grind the problem areas down as thin as possible, and laminate sheet styrene over them. Fill/prime/repaint.

I found a new set of rims for it; 20's from a Maisto Infiniti FX 45 diecast kit, w/some of their smaller 18" tires stretched over them. Veyron thinks the chrome is hideous :uhoh: :icon16: . I kinda like it, but will refinish them in more of a polished aluminum look to tone the blingometer down to a 7 from the current 9 :evillol: . This is a GT, it is NOT a sports car. This car is way too friggin' huge to ever be anything but a GT. And I have to say, my version kicks ass vs. the boring thing that Ferrari offers-and depreciates like a rock :shakehead

Well, what can I say, very cool as always, looks splendid. The wheels are IMO too "bling" though, they would look better in Ferrari-style matte aluminium... That's just my two cents, though! Will you do a tan interior?

Thanks, I tried the matte rims from the same kit (came w/two sets), they aren't blingy enough and look dull. Something in between the matt silver and the chrome is what I'll end up with. I'm not sure about interior color; either a blood red and black or blue and black, unless I find a brownish-tan that I like that looks good w/this shade of paint. The local dealer had one of these in the same color w/a gray interior, it was boring :shakehead

Good to see that you've conquered this! Hopefully this is not somehow related to this new Revell plastic?? Sure seems like it... (if I read it right, it sounded like the problem went away after you put in some different plastic...??)

You managed to make this absolutely fat-assed ugly italian opera singin chick look like some kinda princess.

It's one step forward for sure, but if the base is ugly, it's hard to make it look just right, you ve come very close to it!

can't make a dog look like a tiger, atleast this is a funky dog.

Well looks like you swich this "commendatore" stuff in the supersport dyrection: that's great to me. Awesome color choice in this model, only a thing: may be the chrome reflection's effect but those huge rims seem tooooo havy I would like to see in titanium or magnesium silver . Fantastic stuff:licka:

Bob, it looks great! I'm very happy that it did not meet its demise against the wall and under foot.
Your time and patience has paid off in IMO.

Now, for me, I love the wheels! Too much chrome, I agree. Have you thought about spraying some dullcote over them? I think that would tone them down quite nice. However if that doesn't work you can alwyas e-z off the wheels and paint as you suggested.

Not to blow smoke, but you definitely have an eye for style on some of these cars. I hope to acquire it myself.

I'm wondering a few things about the hood - how thick was the styrene you laminated over it? Did you cover the whole thing? How did you apply the cement to attach it? I laminated some plastic over the windows of an Accord wagon to make it a panel wagon, but I didn't apply glue over 100% of the surface between the two pieces of plastic (I guess I didn't laminate anything, then) and it left lines where the glue was and wasn't after paint. I'm wondering how I could have avoided this.

Thanks, I really love how these wheels look and will definitely tone them down slightly from chrome, but they won't be just bright painted silver nor have a dull finish. I've got some Spaztix Chrome which works a lot like Alclad Chrome, when you clearcoat the Spaztix it stays brighter than if you clear Alclad, and it will look like a factory clearcoated/polished aluminum rim. It's my model, I don't care if people don't like my wheel's color choice as long as I do :wink: And I really don't mind the chrome (I usually hate it) as it looks strangely appropriate on this car. Anyway, I'll try to have this ready to debut at the Birminham, AL NNL in early March.

The areas where I laminated were small-I used very thin styrene, probably .005 or so; it was a last-ditch effort to block what I felt might be something leeching from the plastic under the paint. I only used a thin strip next to the passenger side hood vent, between the vent and the edge of the hood, and the other is the front driver's corner of the hood. Just enough material to cover the areas that had blistered. The styrene was thinner than the paint and the hood styrene that I ground away, so I used Tamiya polyester putty to fill them back up. They were spot repairs, I didn't keep adding more and more paint to the middle of the hood, just to the areas that I was fixing repeatedly, and then they were sanded down.

Trying to finish this one up today. Friday evening saw the completion of the engine and chassis.

Considering this is a Revell AG kit sourced in Poland it's a great kit. Everything on the engine/chassis fit well and is nicely engraved. Too bad so much of it ends up hidded from view in the final assembly. I had no problem assembling these parts, and it's not a "typical" layout. Yeah, there are still some mold lines here and there, but most will be invisible when it's built. I'll be fitting the custom wheels last using the "brake mounted to wheel, wheel mounted to hub" method of getting the wheels where they belong w/o monkeying w/the kit's pre-determined wheel placement. So the stubs on the hubs may be removed if they don't help w/the process of locating the wheel/brake assemblies.

I'm amazed actually-all the Revell car kits that were sourced in Poland previously had some serious issues, most from seemingly crude tooling. I'm nearly done w/this one, and everything fits quite well. The only issue I'm having in final assembly is the chassis is so long and it's a fairly thin casting that it's slightly warped and will need to be glued under pressure to seat properly. Everything else fits so amazingly well on this kit. Even the dashboard which mounts to the body cowl instead of the interior bucket.

So they can move production back to Poland from China as far as I'm concerned :wink:
