Headlights

Hey i was just wondering if theres any way the headlights can be shut off on a 98 GP when the car is on, we also have 2 chevys with automatic headlights too, so i geuss its a GM thing, i was just wondering if theres any way they can be shut off while the car is still running (like if im parked but still want the car on) let me know if theres a way to do that. thanks! :confused:

If you have the parking brake engaged, the lights will not come on until the parking break is released. This will only work when the car is first started. The auto lights cannot be shut off after they are turned on.

Check your manual and maybe soemone who knows more than me will pipe in, but I am almost positive they did not change this til the 04' models.


I figured it out since my previous car was a manual and I was in the habit of setting the parking break. I thought my auto lights didn't work since they wouldn't turn on after I started the car. Then I found out the parking break was the culprit.

ah that link told me what i wanted to know too, (about the daylight running lights) it kinda annoys me how their always on, and also thanks jesse ill try that e-brake.

Did the e-brake kill the headlights? My wife has a 2000 Grand Am and it won't kill them unless you have it pulled before you start the car.

yea it does work, i tried it on a chevy that i have also, must be a GM thing

When your ignition is off and you start the car with e-brake on, the lights will not turn on until ebrake is disengaged. Once e-brake is released, DRL or auto lights (night) turn on.

After what I stated in the 1st para. happens, you CANNOT shut either the DRL or full lights off. I checked my manual too.

I wanted to clear up any confusion so I don't get a "what you said didn't work" back tomorrow :).

yea i noticed that too, must be some kind of safety thing or something, i had absolutely no idea you could do that with the e-brake, thanks for the tips though
