TMIC = trunk mount intercooler
OR are you asking about a TOP mount IC?

There are a few Top mounts out there.
There are many, many more trunk mounts.
I am doing a trunk mount.

was thinking top mount, the trunk mount look like to much additional fabracation / cutting

Is there a reason you're thinking of top mount?

bob stone

not really, just need to get a new turbo soon and was figuring on getting a new ic also

top mount works fine, the st165 came with an air-air top mount, i have one in my 1.5.

i'd suggest just getting an st185 air-water IC though...

Top mount works fine, but I'm wondering why you'd opt for that over the original placement? Air duct is there, its plenty easy to run dual fans (push/pull), or whatever water setup you had in mind.

just to be diffrent :P

There is a manufacturer making a top mount for the turbo MR2 now and showing great results ~ especially ocmpared to the side mounts.

The benefits of a top mount:
1. You can have a much larger core
2. You can place it over the tranny instead of the exhaust side of the turbo

Why I do not want Air-to-water:
1. added complexity
2. added weight
3. Against NHRA rules

Doesn't greddy make a topmount?

Somebody... can't remember...

GReddy makes a side mount, that is what is in Hyde now.

MR2turbo93, for a track day where you are doing serious driving and a lot of laps, both ICs would suck.

A large trunk-mount IC or a Water-to-Air would be a better option.

hmmm I dont have that kind of money... I'll be going to lime rock its about 45min away and i wantto get i nas much time as possible. I wonder if the top mount with a fan and the air scoop would work better than the side mount with two fans ... I wish parts were free.

If you are refering to the Tom's style scoops that sit on the roof, they completely go against the air flow of the MR2. Air flows through our engines from the bottom and sides up through the engine lid.

A trunk-mounted intercooler is actually cheaper than a side or top mount, but you lose your trunk :(

If you have concerns about tracking your car, you may want to think about water injection.

when you say trunk mount is cheaper, you talking like 100 - 200 or a lot cheaper ???

well i have my black 93 turbo but im in the process of buying a 92 NA.... im going to do the turbo swap and turn it into a pretty much track only car so loosing the trunk is no big deal.... but how do you get air to move across the intercooler in the trunk ... scoops like yours or just use a fan... how much of a pain is it to set up a water to air ?

MR2turbo93

water injection was always the plan heck thats the plan for my street car

I've done the W2A, but you need a pump, a reservoir and all the tubing and plumbing and electrcial work ...blah, blah, blah

There are lots of ways to get air across a trunk mount.I am going to be using 3 scoops on the side of the car to get air IN. I am using the subaru scoop to get air out and I am removing the space between the rear taillights.

Hmmm... what if you robbed a water to air system off of another car such as a GMC Typhoon .... does the WTA need to be hooked into the ECU in anyway?

SHORTYBOY113

you can maybe take the WTA off of an sti they have water injected. also i am about to get an intercooler for my car i have a ct20b turbo. should i go for the trunk mount or just the standard side mount.

JekylandHyde
07-08-2005, 06:42 AM
The WTA system does not get hooked into the ECU.
The easiest route would be to get a WTA system off of the 3SGTE on the Toyota Celica. :)

SHORTYBOY, STI's have a water sprayer on their intercooler, that is not the same as water injection.
It is also not the same as an air-to-water intercooler. They are 3 separate parts/ideas.

o ok i was miss lead then. is it worth the money to get the spearco intercooler. i think its the intercooler on nopi.com for $1200. thats kinda pricie for me but do u no of anywhere cheaper. anybody

JekylandHyde

Spearco is probably the best side mount intercooler you can buy.

The GReddy is the best side ount for the money though.

By any chance does anyone know how efficant the Celica WTA is?

SHORTYBOY113
07-08-2005, 06:52 PM
does turbonetics make the spearco intercooler. on the nopi site it says turbonetics and i cant find a spearco i/c anywhere. alls that i see is greddy and hks.

MR2turbo93

HP motoring sells the MR2 kit for abour $950.00. Turboneytics and spearco are sister companys thats why there logos look similar and they also own F-Max.com which sells turbo kits.

You won't find anything more efficient than an air to water intercooler. What you want to do is pick up a air to water intercooler from an ST205 or ST185 Celica, the ST205 units are bigger. I picked one up for $400 + shipping from a guy in Canada. Then you need your pump (centri-puppy), lines (aluminum if you are creative with a bender, or rubber otherwise), and a heat exchanger up front (don't skimp on this). A resevoir is optional, and allows for the addition of ice on track days

You can be really creative and do what a guy Jim Griffen did on mr2oc did, and put your air conditioning core in the resevoir. I would do this but I no longer have a/c.
