Alright im wondering what were the best engines used in Camaros. Im talking the best engines for every gen. Like one for 1st gen, another for 2nd gens and so on, also it can be special option like Yenko, berger and what not, but im more interested in hearing about common options.

Any 2002 that landed the LS6 block.
That is all I really know about though, not sure about the other gens.

what about the LS1? I still think thats the greatest like r. kelly's song "i'm the worlds greatest"

first gen - the 427 yenko and berger camaros

second gen - not sure

third gen - the 350tpi i believe, not sure if there were any specialty third gen engines

fourth gen - the LS1/LS6 engines. they have such a flat torque curve.

On third gen's, if your just talking Camaro then yes 350 TPI but if your talking all F-bodys the 89 TTA Trans am with the grand national turbo 3.8 would take that honor. Although I am a huge fan of the TPI seeing as I have had 3 vettes with them and loved them all.

go with the 4th gen. LS1 engine for great power.

Oh crap, I should've put Fbodys not just Camaros because i've heard about some Firebirds with crazy engines in them, whats up with that? No love for the Camaro, lol. Well what about T/As then.

first gen 302 was awesome
2nd gen ..... clueless

LT5 was a 32 valve, 4 cam engine that was put in the ZR1's

heres my pick...

1st gen - ZL1, i would say the 302 but im picking its big brother for the 2nd gen, so well go big block here.

2nd gen - 350 LT1 - it was a 350 cid version of the DZ302, and was rated at 360hp in the camaro, 370hp in the vette, making it the most powerful carburated small block chevy ever made.

3rd gen - for the camaro, TPI 350, for the firebird, definatly the TTA.

4th gen - 7.0L LS1 based C5R engine, in the limited run ZL1's

Yenko was very overrated. In 1969, you were able to order the COPO option, which came with a 427/425 motor in it. All yenko did was order these, and stripe them.

So
First Gen: 427/425 COPO option
Third Gen: TTA Supercharged 3.8L
Forth Gen: LS6 baby :)

89IROC&RS
06-23-2005, 12:13 AM
yenko overrated???? the copo camaros were bad ass. although i do personally feel the baldwin motion camaros were faster.

flatlander757
06-23-2005, 12:25 AM
just for clarification:

second gen = best engine was the LT-1. its not the same as the 4th gen LT1(no dash). it was way ahead of its time from what i hear.

first gen 302 was awesome
2nd gen ..... clueless
3rd gen, there was one, and only one 25th anniversary with an LT5

the 25th anniversary camaro heritage edition (that they only made 2 of) was actually a b4c, that was 1le suspended, 350tpi w/ vette heads and vette cam along with a 6-speed, 3.73 gears and 3-in exhaust all they way back... i found an article about it in GM high tech, its what i used for my stripe pattern :grinyes: the LT5 didn't even debut in vettes till '94 i believe... but i'm near 100% sure they were never in camaros, especially the third gen.

the heritage camaro would run a 13.5, and was said to be the "best camaro never made".

chevy scrapped the idea of making the heritage camaro but kept the stripe package. there are some people that say that if they did make that camaro it may have created more excitement for the debut of the 4th gen, which may have upped sales... i guess we will never know...

to answer the question:
1st: 302
2nd: LT-1
3rd: 3.8 turbo (or lt1 in my case :evillol:)
4th: ls1 w/ ls6 block (only a few came w/ that block)

FormulaLT1
06-23-2005, 02:59 AM
The LT5 was debuted in the Vette in 1990 and was originally scheduled to be released as a 89 model but they were not able to get it together til 90 but there have been reported phrototype lt5 vette's as far back as 1986 and I can very well see a lt5 making its way into a Camaro.

When you guys say the 302 was the first gens best engine, do you guys, in all seriousness, know what your talking about? Or are you just talking from what you've heard? Im not trying to be an ass, but the only thing the 302 had on the 396 was weight. The 396/375 would destroy the 302 in acceleration, horsepower, torque, etc. The 302 was also a high reving engine.

I guess its possible to have an opinion, maybe your father or someone you know has a Z/28, and thats why you like it. Thats perfectly fine, but I don't see the 302 as a better motor than the 396/375.

I guess it would also depend on what kind of racing / judging one did. In a road course, the 302 would be all over the 396 because the 396 was front heavy, and would be dipping very badly. In drag racing the 396 was a monster.

Experience: My dad took his 396/375 69 Camaro Z11, corrected the timing from the factory, and basicly did a performance tune up to it, removed the mufflers, and was turning 11's all day long, on an automatic. Thats putting it in D, and driving it.

Now the 302 is an awesome smallblock, dont get me wrong, and I absolutly love all 1st gen camaros, even the V6 ones, but I honestly thing the 396/375 motor was better than the 302.

if ur talking about drag engines then why didn't u say the 427? the 427 will beat the 396... and besides u'd be extremely surprised how fast those 302's were, they were not very "streetable" engine cuz they didn't make hardly any power at low rpm, but the damn things spun up to 10 grand and made monstrous power, i don't have the numbers but the power the 302 put out rivaled if not beat the 396. and there is no such thing as a first gen v6, they used I6's

drvngstorm05
06-25-2005, 04:02 PM
asking us if we knew what we were talking about was not very nice, pointing out facts is fine, or stating ur opinion would be great but implying that we are ignorant is not good... especially since u thought there were v6's in the first gens...

cooltc2004
06-25-2005, 07:58 PM
Your right about it being an I6, but your looking to hard into what Im saying. I hope your not the kind of person that corrects spelling too...

And I wasnt implying that you guys are ignorant, and I think the question "Do you know what your talking about" is a legit question. I said I wasnt trying to be an ass, so that should IMPLY that I want to know if your talking from experience or some hear say. Too many people look way to deep into what others are trying to say. If I hurt your feelings, TSB, but thats not what I intended to do.

And yes, the 427 is a better engine than the 396/375, but I dont have any experience with this engine, so Im not going to talk like I do.

Rally Sport
06-25-2005, 08:58 PM
Anyone know why they didnt keep using I6 in later Camaros? I mean arent I6s better than V6s?
