The DZ302 was rated at around 290hp, but actualy made closer to 100hp more than that. In a lightweight, high revving package and an upgraded racing suspension. The dual quad version ran 0-60 in 5.0sec. hardly a slouch. I have no personal experience with the dual quad version, but i have experience with both a 427 and 302 powered first gen. and either one will knock your socks off, you just drive them differently. the big block is kinda like driving an automatic, its a no brainer, easy to go fast, just point the car press the gas and go. driving the 302 is like a manual, you really have to drive it, pay attention to the rpms, and wring the most out of it, to me the 302 was far more fun to drive, and thats why its my favorite. also it gets points because its the one and only camaro specific engine ever made. to me that makes it the greatest camaro engine of all time.

I take it the 302 camaros didn't have rev limiters like the Boss 302 mustangs did at 8,000rpm? Also, how well can a factory 302 spin at 10,000rpm like stated earlier. I am not trying be an ass here and argue with what you all say, I am just wondering. I just wouldn't think that a STRAIGHT FACTORY one could even begin to live at 10k or 9k for that matter comfortably daily.

Just wondering

(on and thanks in advance for setting my thinking straight on the 302)

Oh and isn't that a little fast to be spinning a pushrod engine with all that extra mass to be spinning? I am just wondering since I understand that they had to work pretty hard to get that 7k redline outa that new corvette engine

Thanks

straight out off the factory 302's didn't rev 10 grand... but w/ light mods they were easily able to rev that high... i'm not sure where the factory redline on the 302 was... but i will tell u that when u have never heard an engine scream till u hear a v8 rev 10 grand... its incredible :evillol:

pushrod engines have more moving parts yes but actually less spinning parts than a dohc v8 like ford has, cuz the lifters pushrods and rocker arms are moving but not spinning... anyway the newer engine from gm all use hydraulic roller cams and lifters, the old 302 was a mechanical flat tappet cam... the flat tappet lifters weigh much much less and they can turn real hard.

plus the 302 had a really short stroke... i think it was a 273 crank... and 327 bore... 89 correct me if i'm wrong... but i think that was it

short stroke engines can spin like hell, but are meant more for high end horsepower, while stroker engines make gobs of torque but u can't turn them as hard...
