I've been hearing a lot aobut this. What actaully happened?
Basically, the Michelin tires were having trouble handling the high-speed banked curve at Indy and they couldn't "guarantee" the tires safety to the teams that use them. Ralf Schumi crashed because of the fault in the tires on the first day of practice. Since this was a safety hazard for the drivers the team managers said they wouldn't allow the drivers to race. This situation was brought to the attention of the FIA and NOBODY could come to a compromise to bring a show to the fans.
Being at Indy and staying at a hotel like a lot of people, I had no access to the internet and had no idea of the tire fiasco. As I saw it, everything was going great at the beginning of the event. All the drivers got into the classic cars from the Indy Museum and took a lap around the track, waving to fans. Then the drivers got in their cars and took to inital warm-up lap around the track. As they were coming around to form the starting grid and start the race all of the Michelin-using teams (14 cars) pulled into the pits and in to their garage. This left 6 cars on the track and a lot of pissed off fans. The rest is history, we watched six cars go around the track with little-to-no excitement.

Oh, it's REALLY the FIA's fault that Michellin provided crap tyres that were incompetent of doing the job.
Ferrari, Minardi and Jordan are such idiots for having the proper tyres and being able to complete the race, yeah fuck those bastards for being able to complete a race safely.
Why the hell should the rules be bent for the Michellin running teams?
And for the record, on the subject of Montiero, a podium couldn't have come for a better guy.
I feel sorry only for the fans who never got what they paid for EXCEPT the jackasses who threw bottles on the track, endangering the safety of the 6 racers on the track is the most moronic thing I've ever seen, I'd expect it at a NASCAR or V8 Supercars race, NOT F1.

Thats not the whole story. The organizers wouldn't let the race teams change tires after qualifing. The tire company would not guarantee their tires after using them for qualifing and then racing on them at the high speeds the track sets

alot of you are going on like you know what you're talking about.
let me set the record straight.
the FIA is completelty the one to blame for this entire fiasco. here's why...
yes, Michelin may have had the "unproper" tires for the race, so most would think that they are to blame. BUT, here's the reason why they're in the clear.
the Indy track was recently resurfaced, with diamond-cut asphalt or something to that effect. whatever it was, it totally changed the surface of the track. neither tire manufacturer (Bridgestone and Michelin) were allowed to do any pre-race testing.
BUT, let us not forget that Bridgestone and Firestone are in fact one and the same company. and Firestone, as it happens, is a tire provider for the IRL, which has already raced this season at the newly resurfaced Indy track. therefore, Fire/Bridgestone took what knowledge they had from that race and transferred it over to their F1 tires.
Michelin has no prior testing experience on the newly resurfaced track. therefore, Bridgestone had a VERY unfair advantage coming into the race, and the pig-headed FIA (who, i might add, was probably pushed into their decision by bed-mate Ferrari, who not-so-coincidentally runs Bridgestone tires) didn't bring this into the equation when making their decisions.
it was a dark day for F1, and i'd be surprised if the race even came back to Indy next year. this whole fiasco also handed Schumacher a hollow victory, which brings him within 10 points of Kimi Raikonnen. i promised myself that if Schumacher is once again dominant this season, i will not be watching. it's not exciting to watch a race/season when you already know who the winner will be. so therefore this bungle of a race has pushed the season one step closer to that happening for me.
GO ALONSO!

So that passes the blame to the Michellin clad teams then, nobody held a gun to thier head and said "USE MICHELLIN!" Ferrari, Minardi and Jordan had the good hindsight to stick with Bridgestone and it paid off on the day. Monaco and Nurburgring should have proved that the Michellins are crap endurance tyres in the first place. Brigestones Indy experience isn't an unfair advantage, it's simply Bridgestone being a part of a bigger, more experienced and better company, in the same way Ferrari/McLaren are bigger/better/more experienced teams than Minardi.
I see nothing wrong with Schumacher winning, he's the best there is and the best win, simple as that, I just love how he brings out the crybaby in the Anit-FErrari crowd. I'd much sooner he (Or even Kimi and I'm certainly not the biggest Kimi fan) won than Flavios butt buddy Alonso, in fact I'd love to see Alonso get creamed by Fisichella, that'd teach Flavio a thing or two about favouritism.
PS. Please don't give the "you don't know what you're talking about" line when giving an opinion, it sounds stupid, just a little advice for the future.

I just told you. Perhaps read a little more carefully next time.
The Minardi at Monaco that caused him to run up the back of DC and Webber causing the first corner pile up at the Ring.
Both of these caught MS and slowed him down significantly, neither of these affected Kimi or the Renaults, Montoya was off the pace in those two races for the same reasons as Michael.

They cant even do that without politics fucking up everything. god I hate all those rich fucks behind the scene controlling everything and every damn rule. Everytime the team that they dont want wins... They make a new rule to stop them. Its getting out of hand.
Correct me if im wrong - But last time I checked F1 is about the advanced racecars on the planet with the best technology and development gone into them, And yet there limiting them so much. Theres a difference between challenging the teams with a little restriction and going all out to just stop the teams from progressing.
An EX for your all... Fia has mandated that next budget cuts will be put in place all engine DEVELOPMENT funding will be cut ""90%""! Who is the Fia to tell teams how and how much teams spend when its not even their money. There getting 75% of the income that F1 makes anyway so why must they bitch more.

No I 100% agree with you but the only way to change the matter is for the F1 Drivers to breakoff an start a new series. I know your right in the Fact that the Fia wont listen to either me nor michael schumacher or for that matter the whole slew of drivers an teams.

And how am I supposed to do that when the thread I want to post in is not in the political forum? Had it not been a sarcastic statement anyways, I would be rather miffed at you telling me my views are not appropriate and/or valid to the thread because it is in the wrong forum. :nono:

now wait a second. I dunno about this huge avalanche of shit going down, but as for ssoom blaming the guys that didn't use the tires that would have kept them on the track... In my unbiased opinion, they shoudl be able to use the tires that they want. I mean it wasn't exactly in their control that they got shafted. How were they to know? As far as they knew, it seems to me, they could use those tires. I mean that's like blaming a lady that was walking along and a house randomly fell on her and killed her for not taking a different path.

This is an international automotive forum and this is a racing thread which has norhing to do with national politics. Therefore i will not allow any of the ridiculous polical insults (sarcastic of otherwise) get outside of that junk heap called politics and current affairs.

I'm not the biggest fan of the FIA & Bernie Ecclestone. But anyone who thinks they were solely to blame for the shambolic weekend has an IQ of < 1.
Michelin fucked up, and the FIA rightly didn't change the track to rescue them at the 11th hour. Whether the one tyre per race rule is 'right' is an entirely different matter.

Yes all they had to do was put in the chicane right before 13 and everything would have been fine...

as I've been saying in the F1 forum I agree with jay. But i'm blaming less Michelin, they messed up but IMO it was the teams that escalated this situation. They should have taken a second safe tire from michelin and incur the penalties as per rules. Instead they thought they could twist FIA's arm and change the circuit to fit their needs.

Yes but the fact remains it would have been SAFER FOR THE DRIVERS to add one measly chicane.

well, if you're going for safety, then it would be safest not to be racing at all... lol

And thats what they did lol... In part it was the Fia stubborn thickheadedness that brought this whole situation about. A whole commitee and not one is/was Race car driver, it doesnt make any sence.

yes but that is only one of the options that would've made it safer for the drivers. And this option would've put the bridgestone teams at a disadvantage. Shumacher said thay they brought a safer slower tire for this course. So now the bridgestone teams would've been stuck with a slower tire on a course no longer requiring it.
The best option would've been for the michelin teams to take the penalties and bring in a slower safer tire like the bridgestone.

It'd actually have been more dangerous for all teams and unfair on the bridgestone teams, who came with a safe lower-performance tyre.
Think about it, the teams practiced and qualified on the track pre-chicane and now there's a new corner and the drivers have got to somehow find out how to tackle it. Don't forget that you're adding a chicane at the 11th hour, with no consideration for brakes/aero/whatever. Ridiculous idea.
If Michellin teams had just accepted the penalties, this'd have been avoided, they didn't and tried to be stubborn about effectively breaking the rules and they paid for it by gifting Schumacher 10 points and Ferrari 18.

I had a huge exam recently and didn't study one topic hard enough. I knew i'd struggle to get the related question right in the exam, and sure enough, i fucked it up. Should i have called up the exam organisers beforehand and asked them to remove the question from the paper? Fuck no.
Michelin came to Indy unprepared and asked for special treatment. Should they have got it? Fuck no. It's their fuck-up. They should reimburse every single fan twice what they paid for their tickets / hotels / transportation.

I'm pretty sure MS doesn't need his fans to make excuses for him

Nope, not going to bother, I am already well aware that I'm best off banging my head against a concrete block wall than debating anything with the anti-MS/Ferrari crowd.

Everyone blaming Michelin seemed to have missed the part where:
#1. Like Suislide said, Michelin had no chance of testing any tires on the tracks, how the fuck were they supposed to come prepared?
#2. They asked the FIA if they could ship in a new set of tires that would be safe for the road, even without the chicane, the FIA said "no".
#3. If Michelin had failed to do prior tests because they just didn't get around to it, then I would also blame Michelin, but they were not allowed to do prior tests! Which is more FIA bullshit.
Conclusion: the FIA is to blame for everthing.

just FYI that amazing conclusion of yours is based on at least one false point:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsport/formula_one/4110808.stm
The FIA also gave the teams the option of using different tyres and accepting a penalty.

a write up from Minardi Team Principal Paul Stoddart, a man who was present during all proceedings that let up to the events of June 19th, 2005. a very good read.
"there is no question in my mind that the farce that occurred on Sunday, June 19, 2005 at Indianapolis was the responsibility of the FIA President, Max Mosley, and compounded by the lack of support from Jean Todt"
"For the avoidance of doubt, in my opinion, Michelin was responsible enough to admit that the problem was of their creation. When one considers that even the replacement, Barcelona-specification tyres that were shipped to IMS, when tested, apparently exhibited the same characteristics as those that originally failed, this clearly is a case of force majeure, as I do not for a moment believe that Michelin intentionally brought tyres to the event that were unsuitable for competition."
there you have it, the FIA and Ferrari.
of course Mr.Stoddart's is not the only side of the story, and not the only opinion that matters, but in this write up he is mostly not stating opinion but stating facts of what happened as he observed them.
