Hey, I may have posted something to this nature back around new years, but I've had some time to refine it. Sometime in the next two years I'd like to start a project I like to call "The Ultimate Amature Blown Camaro". Oh, I forgot to add. What do you think my MPG and aprox. HP would be? Not including the turbo, obviously.
And also, no I don't like hondas. I asume you refer to the headlight covers and taillight covers? Those are questionable, and as for the ground effects, they aren't so bad looking.

dude...you might as well buy the car and buy the car cover and keep it covered cuz at 18 unles youve got extremely loaded parents or you stumbled on a winning lotery ticket...your going to be owing for that car for like the first 3-4 years then its gonna take you like 5-10 to get all that shit done..cuz your putting down prices for the parts...are you a mechanic..did you even think about what its going to cost you labor wise for the shit your NOT going to be able to do yourself...your talking about a 60-70 thousand dollar car at the age of 18...where you going to get this kinda cash at that age
Mod'd_Cav
06-09-2005, 12:39 PM
oh and never mind the thousands you might end up paying for insurance for that car..cuz you think the agency is going to charge you regular price for that kinda car?

i was referring to the neons, white face guages, WING, and yes the headlight and taillight covers. but whatever do what you want (and you will owe money for the rest of your life) enless of course your parents are so insane loaded it dosnt matter which in that case you should buy me a new car :grinyes:

Probably not. I already know all of that, known it for a while, don't need a lecture :)
Anyways, my uncle restores cars, he does fiberglass, body work, rebuilds engines, has a full service shop with lift. He runs a side business of rebuilding big rig steering pumps and hydrulic pumps. And as for the money, I know it's a lot. If I was 24 would you be saying the same things?
I know what I'm talking about, for the most part. Besides, it's always fun to plan ahead. I'd like to do all of this while at living at home so I don't have living costs, only a job and a car.

well, ill try not to lecture you about this, as im sure youve heard it before, but in my opinion, a LS1 driven SS is too much for a first car in and of itself. Add all the other things on top, and there is a real chance you are going to kill yourself. I worked my way up to my IROC, and right now its only running about 270hp. and its more than enough to get me into trouble.
The issue of money is a real one, i saved alot of money because im a GM tech, got my parts at just above cost, and did all the work myself, and it still kept my wallet empty. Insurance is gonna be a kick in the crotch with your age and the car youre looking at.
to answer your question about if we would say this if you were 24, the answer is yes, if this was your first car, and you didnt have experience with high torque rear wheel drive cars.
We all had the same dreams and aspirasions, nothing we say is gonna change anything youre looking at, just be realistic, and dont be discouraged when things wind up taking years longer and costing thousands of dollars more than you thought.

^ Thanks, that was a nice reply. I doubt I will end up having this as a first car. In this case, it really does cost more to go first class.
I've been looking more resently at something like a Ford Lightning. Still sporty and fast, but not near as likley to kill myself.

lol, damn, expencive tastes all around. If you really wanna finish that blown camaro project, i suggest a slightly less expencive daily driver. Take a look at third gen camaro RS modles, they are selling for around 4-5 grand and are fuly reliable daily drivers with plenty of performance to keep ya happy. and will leave you at LEAST 20k to spend on your blown project instead of spending it on the lightning. You gotta pick your battles, if you want one expensive toy the blown project for instance, i strongly suggest comprimising on the second car. but thats just my advice, take it or leave it.

that is wise.... i most deffinetly agree....a third gen is MUCH easier to work on as opposed to a fourth because on a fourth gen the motor is tucked up under the windshield so far. Youll have two very busted up hands everytime you change spark plugs. I love the cars but its a pain in the but to do any work on them. And isnt it true that to take the motor out of them you have to lift the body off of the motor instead of taking out of the hood? This is an observation though and isnt coming from any experience from working on a fourth gen as i dont own one. I have a thirdgen and it has 140000 miles and hasnt given me a single problem yet. Over the summer im planning to put an LS1 motor in and upgrade my steering components. i only payed 1000 for the car cuz i knew the guy. It handles like a dream and once i get the ls1 in there ill have the best bang for the buck on the road. I think i can find one with a tranny for about 4000. So when its said and done ill have 6000 in the car and ill stomp on most anything else. ohhhh......stomping.......I love my car though even if i wasnt getting an ls1 and kept the slow 5.0 i love the car and they are winderfull vehicle. thats just my opinion/advice.

I don't see it either 89, I dunno.
As for you IROC&RS, thanks for your advice, I value it. You're not as stuck up as some of the idiots I've seen around. See, the thing is that I have my heart set on a v-8, and I have loved camaros forever.
Perhaps I could just get a z28 and leave it stock for a while. 'Cause I only like the 4th gen Maro's body style, the '98 up.
See, my friend is about a half year older then me, and got his DL at 16, got himself a $800 ford Ranger, like an 86 or something, four banger manual, all that. He's snug as a bug in a rug.
But me, I cut a deal with my pops. I'm not getting my DL untill I turn 18. And in exchange, he's going to give me a large chunk of the money he would be spending on insuring me for those two years. So I figure that's a good $6-8,000 right there.
I've seen '99 and '00 z28's for as low as $14,000. Plus I'm going to be getting some sort of job soon, I'd like to work at some sort of auto place.
And I just have always wanted a beastly blown Camaro. I want to pursue that.
So yeah, that's my story.

Not a very good view angle, but you can tell it's not huge and really high (I.E., big enough to fit the rice hopper in the trunk)

Being willing to wait an extra two years to get your license shows a good amount of patience and maturity. Did you discuss with your pops the amount of money he would save in not paying insurance that he will give you at 18? To total 8 grand you'd have to be paying over 330/month, and even at your age thats ridiculous. I'd have a chat with your old man, and see what he might be willing to fork over, so you know what your dealing with. Dream big, but keep a realistic perspective so you don't become too disappointed. Best of luck to ya man!

yeah it sucks when you find out your dreams are just dreams. somehow the money dissapears before you realize it then your just stuck with your own :2cents: and it sucks. so let the saving begin
by the way good choice in the wing its not all riced out. wait isnt that a spoiler??????? anyways hope it all works out that would be way nice
(i pay 2000 a year for insurance)

Based on my calulations, my dad would pay somewhere around 1700 a half to insure me on our '04 GMC sierra. That works out as 3400 a year or so.
Now, that's not counting any family discounts or crap like that, so it could be less.
And also waiting 'till I'm 18 should help me with insurrance rates, to a degree. Overall I think the only chink in my plan is the massive money it takes to mod a car, combined with the time it takes.
So, all that in mind, I'm pretty much going to try and stick to my plan of getting the Z28, or even better, an SS of around '99-'00 in the next year or two. Do some low cost mods in the mean time, like a tuner or something.
Then by 18 when I get a real job, live at home till like 21 -23 and my car should be all done. And you will all shudder at the thought of meeting me on the street (hahaha).

well well now, i have to say im impressed by your ability to hold off twoyears for your licence. and thats a sweet deal you worked with your old man. I got mine the day i turned 16 and was immediatly making an ass of myself, spinning tires in my 1977 oldsmobile. lol, guess that makes you more mature than i was at that age.
As far as pulling the engine out of a fourth gen, you dont have to take the body off, it makes it easier to get the engine out if you take off the front end, or you can drop the front suspension and K member and get it out that way.
But i would say, if you really want the blown camaro, do this.
Buy the SS or Z28 you want, drive it for a year or two to get a feel for it. Then go to paxton or vortec and get a bolt on supercharger, these are far easier to install than a turbo and will still offer up to 150 extra hp. after that focus on the other mods you want to do, and do it a piece at a time. rather than trying to do it all at once. Third gens are much easier to work on, but get what you love. if you like the fourth gens, then get one. and roll with it.
still not a fan of the wing youre lookin at though ;) but its not my car, so rock out with your cock out.

Dude there is sooo much everyone is gonna (and has) lecture on.
Please, for the sake of yourself (and the camaro) consider getting a beater car for a 1st car so when you end up crashing it (some insane % of people wreck first car) you'll have more experience. A v-8 is WAY more power then an experienced driver should have, end of story. Doesn't matter the age 16, 18 - 30. No experience and power is a bad combination.
If you still want the V8- get a 3rd gen 305 and you'll be happy. Still quick and really strong but not some crazy 325 hp beast stock, then turbo? Thats a drag racer not a daily driver.
Insurance, under 25, v8, sports car = +300$ a month end of story.
(I have v6 maro i'm 20 and its 180$ a mo)
Save up your money..
And.. do you know how much 30,000 REALLY is? Thats almost as much as the average americans YEARLY INCOME! So unless you are racking in 2,000$ a month+ I think you should keep your sights high but understand that this isn't a little project. Literally paying off the car is afew years, all those, I'd say 5 years minimum before the car is finished.
My 0.02$ Not trying to be rude I just want to make sure you understand what you are planning. We were all in your shoes too dont worry. :)

I've seen those wings, they came on some Camaros stock, I think it was the Dale Earnhardt Jr or Sr. Camaro that had them. I cant remember but they do look nice, not an overkill or ricer like look.

well, ill try not to lecture you about this, as im sure youve heard it before, but in my opinion, a LS1 driven SS is too much for a first car in and of itself. Add all the other things on top, and there is a real chance you are going to kill yourself. I worked my way up to my IROC, and right now its only running about 270hp. and its more than enough to get me into trouble.
i jumped right in on my I-ROC running about 330 horsepower but im not dumb and just blow donuts and do burn outs and street races all the time im pure drag strip oo yah baby but as for this kid good luck its soooo hard to save money and have a life never mind the gas these things suck down

is it possible to find a 94-96 LT1 Z28 and change the front clip to the 99-02 one? my first car is my 94 Z28 (auto) and it is PLENTY of power for me. after a CAI and exhaust, I'll be set until i move out(or get greedy for more power). i am hoping to wait until I turn 21(i believe every 5 or so years your insurance rate is lowered if you haven't been in an accident) i will start focusing on making my car stupid fast. until then i'll just fix the few bugs(loose door handle, faded paint, small spot of chipped clearcoat, clicking noise in my passenger side front speaker[doh]) until i feel i deserve more horses in the stable :grinyes:

hey 89IROC&RS .....you dont have to lift the body off to pull the motor out? you have to drop the suspension with the motor attached yeah but the body has to come up to get it out of there. You said you can remove the front end and get it out that way... more detail or refference to a site because unless im mistaken...which is likely at this point.... the gm manual says to drop the suspension and lift the body up to get the motor out. That what i would have to do to get the head off of the firebird i was looking at because i cant see my torque wrench fitting in there. If I could get the motor out without a lift or much difficulty id just replace the motor and call it a day.

ENGINE
SLP LS6 Intake Manifold for 1997-00 LS1 Engines $474.95
SLP Rotating-Assembly, ''ZL-402'' LS1 (Low Compression) $2,595.00
Patriot Stage II Center bolt 98+ LS1 Ported Heads Assembly $1,295.00
Comp LS1 1.85 ROLLER ROCKER KIT $489.95
$4854.90
Ditch those rockers, add a good turbo cam.
Ditch those heads....get AFR's. More money, but worth it. The thicker deck height alone will save a turbo'd car.
Don't forget new head bolts, new gaskets, new lifters, etc....
That $4800 is LOW balling it. A lot.
Insurance, under 25, v8, sports car = +300$ a month end of story.
I was 22 when I bought my Trans Am. $220 a month full coverage, one ticket.

Well....you will need that stroker kit installed. Block will need honed and balanced. Not that expensive, but not cheap either.
Engine....LS2 timing chain, LS6 ported oil pump, AFR 205 larger compression chamber heads, a good turbo cam with little overlap, gaskets, etc....
And those 36# injectors won't cut it. At all. They may good enough for the motor alone, but not with boost. I am going to be running 42# on my N/A setup.
You will need 60# injectors, and have CRAP for mileage with that setup.
Good luck!

Under normal driving conditions....12-13 MPG. Under load.....5-6 MPG. You have to feed that compressed air from the turbo a TON of fuel. When you are in boost, it will be sucking up gas, and you need to make sure that your fuel system and injectors can handle it.
Aeromotive A1000 pump
Aeromotive regulator
New large injectors
Wiring and fuel lines.
Fuel system alone will run another $1000, if not more.

You aren't being realistic at all if you are trying to pay for even a quarter of this yourself. You'll have to get a job that pays a whole lot more than minimum wage (which is really hard for a younger guy, I know because I'm 17), and drive without insurance.
I'll be 18 in a few months, and even then I'm going to stay on my mom's insurance because it's like 80 a month for my 94 base model with bare mininum insurance. She's about 45, and hasn't wrecked in about 7 or 8 years, and it's still 80 for bare mininum.
Wait until you get a job, then you'll see how much you actually get from your paycheck. I've been working for about 5 months, and I've gotten about 2000 even after taxes and deductions. That really sucks, but minimum wage sucks.
Just saying don't set your sights too high.

in regard to taking the engine out of a fourth gen, perhaps im misunderstanding what you mean by lifting the body. do you mean the whole car? i thought you were saying you had to remove the body from the chassis.
also you can remove the engine without lifting the car. you have to cut the radiato support out and weld it back in when the engine is placed back in the mounts. its tricky, but you can use a modified engine lift to pull the engine forward out from under the windsheild.

Put rear tires on ramps, and lift the front WAY up.

dude..dont take this as raggin or anything...but he cant be that loaded cuz if he was then he wouldnt have to worry about saving no matter how long or getting a job..so if hes got to get a job and save then hes not that rich...but no-one could make a car like that in that kinda time frame and as easily as hes making it sound...hes making all these plans but hes making them as well..a 16 year old would..firefox..your gonna need a hell of a lot more mods then what your listing..like the other guy said..youve got to think about the fuel system..youve got to think about a driveshaft and rear diff that can handle that kinda power output..then theres strengthening the front end so that the chassis doesnt twist under the torque and im not talking about a simple strut tower bar..then you should prolly consider getting a role cage as so that you dont die when it roles if it does...how about the tires your constantly going to have to replace cuz youve melted them off..with all that power and torque chances are somethings going to snap regardless of how high performance it is..cuz drag cars have to replace parts after each race in some cases...and if you think your going to get away with 300 a month...HAH..dream on not for your age and not for that car when they find out its pushing 600-700hp after all that shit you put thru it....i dont think you should cancel on this plan..but your going to have to realize that you will be paying off this car for years before you even buy your first part...so if you want this project to happen...work like a bastard..dont spend a penny unles its on the car...keep it parked cuz aslong as you have to pay for insurance and gas and payments...your dream isnt going to happen cuz whatever money your going to make its going to go straight into those 3 things i just said...i think you should do what you love by all means...but dont expect this car to be done before the age of 30 dude no offense

All right you bastard, First of all that was ragging for sure.
And read the list if you are going to mouth off, because I know I have a driveshaft and rearend on that list, and of course the fuel system needs done, you think I don't know that? Pumps, lines, fuel and oil coolers and a two-filter setup to name a few.
Why would I take the time to put all the hundreds of little parts on that list when they wouldn't really add all that much in the performance? If you had used your EYES and read what I said, I was asking about the numbers people thought I would get. No one yet has answered that question, but I don't mind.
And when did I mention a time frame? If I remember right I said get the car in the next two years, work to pay it off, and hope to have it done by 23.
And yes, I live at home, will be working for money to spend on the car, that's it. The insurance will be on my parents home policy as a parked car, so no gas money and no hundreds of dollers for liability and crap like that. Now I will give it to you that I hadn't said that yet, I only resently figured out you could do that.
Now, there, I feel better.
Enough about the money, sheesh. I already said I understand all that's involved, but of course everyone assumes that at 16 I don't know crap.
And y'know, I have advice. My uncle who offered to help me out? He restored his '69 'Maro to stock specs , I think his advice is rather sound. My dad has also owned a few cars in his lifetime, and he had a friend once who had a Duster, fixed it all up back in the day for performance. My dad says the thing he most remember about that car, was the first time he drove it. The guy says "Don't worry about stalling it, you can't". And he was right, although my dad about broke their necks, he could NOT stall the engine with letting clutch out. In his words " It about ripped you out of the seat." His friend could burn rubber from a dig and keep it going clear through 4th without moving.
Okay, now I'm done. That just ticked me off, I'm sorry if I hurt feelings or something.

I just don't like the location of the STS kit.
For me, I was thinking supercharger. ATI ProCharger D1. That on top of the 402ci and I should be making more than enough power. 700 at the wheels would be pretty easy I think. Of course, I would have to replan my motor then as well, and the price of that S/C is high. I am just gonna focus on hitting that 500 RWHP number all motor for now.

I have one, but it isn't installed yet.
I have an iron block 402 sitting in my garage, basicly waiting for heads. Saving up for them now. I could have just put on some hogged out stock heads, but I figured I would want to replace them eventually anyways, so I will just do it all at once.
Last dyno that car made 376.8 RWHP and 370.8 ft/pounds of torque, with a SICK curve. That is the stock 346.
Stroker is a 402, with a bigger cam and MUCH better flowing heads. Right around the same compression. Should see close to 500 RWHP with it I hope.
