I started this car a couple weeks ago now as a quick/fun build.
After opening the kit, I thought the hood wood look good in carbon fiber. A Google search popped up this carbon concept car.
Which was on display at SEMA show this year. I intended to paint the car silver and thought the carbon accents worked well.

I painted this car with Cobra Colors Porsche GT silver. The hood and sides were painted gunmetal metallizer as prep for the decals.

Here the hood and sides are in carbon. I sprayed all parts in Tamiya clear, and polished it.
The wheels are out of a Tamiya Skyline race car kit.

I have now added the head and tail lights, and will start the engine bay and interior.
http://images9.fotki.com/v182/photos/4/431166/2282477/DSCF3309-vi.jpg
It has been very humid and raining for weeks here in Atlanta, so I'm just waiting for a nice day to sling some paint.

Okay, wow. Viper SRT10 =. The Carbon Fiber? = :nono:. That look's so bad! I'm sorry, you put carbon fiber on a Honda or a Nissan, you do NOT put it on a Dodge Viper SRT10. I like the fact that you're trying to replicate a model after a real car, but you don't put carbon fiber on an SRT10 under ANY circumstances. I'm not saying you suck or anything, but I just don't like the idea of what you're doing to it. Just my :2cents:

Why not? What rule designates what kind of car you can put CF on?
I think the Viper looks hot! The Tamiya R34 Nismo wheels would be an exact replica of the ones on the 1:1.

Settle down there. I know you have a great hate of c/f anything, even on imports, but you need to let people build it how they want. I think it looks awsome, but IMO i think painted sides would have looked better, either way its badass. The color is soooo nice, and flows works with the c/f very well. The finish is awesome. Keep up the great work, cant wait to see more!

Maybe you should send a letter to Dodge and get them to stop production, quick! They probably don't know that carbon fiber is only for import cars. They currently use carbon composite materials in EVERY SRT10.
Check out the parts that are carbon composite on every single Viper.
http://www.ornl.gov/info/ornlreview/v36_1_03/article_18.shtml
And a better explanation of why they used carbon:
http://www.compositesworld.com/ct/issues/2003/April/60
Dodge really screwed the pooch on this one huh? The fastest best handling Viper to date, and it utilizes carbon composite instead of steel or aluminum. OH MY!
I guess it's not a muscle-car afterall, but a ricer at heart. Carbon composite materials make it lighter and stiffer. The accents I changed would make it even more lighter, hence quicker.
Send a letter to Chevy too, the hood of the 2003 Z06 is carbon fiber, but painted. They probably don't know what they are doing either.
Sorry you don't like it, but it's staying as is. :)
Thanks for looking!

Some people just can't see the fact that others want to build how they want. Why can't everyone just keep their opinoins to themselves if they are bad or agaist how other want to build their models.
Once again amazing job so far.

I was just voicing my opinion.. And besides, carbon composite .vs. carbon fiber. They're both different materials. Carbon fiber is woven, carbon composite is not.

Just as I thought, you don't know jack about carbon fiber.
Composite - A component produced from two or more different materials, e.b., fiber and resin.
Fiber-Carbon comes from the producer in the form of a "FIBER". Fibers are rated in size with a "K" designation: The "K" of a fiber is how many THOUSANDS of tiny "filaments" are grouped together. The smallest, (and most expensive $ per-pound!) is a "1-K" fiber. The "3-K" size is a more commonly used fiber, it contains 3,000 filaments, or 3-times as many as that in a 1-K fiber. Next up in size/strength, with even higher volume of commercial use, is a "6-K" fiber; then "12-K" etc. Carbon fibers are bought and sold priced "by-the-pound".
Weave "weave" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (wv)
v. wove, (wv) wo·ven, (wvn) weav·ing, weaves
v. tr.
1.
1. To make (cloth) by interlacing the threads of the weft and the warp on a loom.
2. To interlace (threads, for example) into cloth.
2. To construct by interlacing or interweaving strips or strands of material: weave a basket.
Composite, fiber and weaving are three entirely different things. Comprende?
Carbon fiber/composites are the material, weaving is the method in which they are joined.

Okay, if I wanted an explanation from a dictionary, I would've looked it up myself. Thank you though. I'm just saying that carbon fiber doesn't look good on an American Sports Car! No, I am not talking about a Cavalier, and cars in that category.

Oh my, you must really hate the Enzo then..pasta anyone? hehe...What if he used the carbon decal all over the whole car, and its components, but painted them all normally, would you not like that either? What if.....you needed to use carbon fiber? Do any of your rc models or your bike have any? you should search this place and see the ALL CARBON BODIED supra one member made, roborex I reckon? You'd prolly think its so ricey that you can see little chinamen (joke people) walking around harvesting it all. Be cool people...Don't forget about the carbon fibers' nearly indestructible hard to damageness, or how it adds hp and fast4rness to the honduhs and such...ahhhgggaaa!!!!!! ....carry one..oh...Cadguy, the viper is coming along great! Keep the cf, ad more!! Moree!!!!! Add so much that Jasons head explodes!!:-D

Thank God theperfectgetaway is here to be the voice of reason! Where are your models, buddy? I'd love to see the great works you've put together - the amazing blend of style and craftsmanship you are so obviously suited to make.
Anyway, in all seiousness, thank God that CADguy is a cool dude and he's not letting the total bastardization of his thread and trivialization of his fantastic build get to him. I have to agree with sidewayzS15 though, the painted sides may look better (and isn't that prototypical? Forgive me for not hitting "back" but it'd take a week to check). Still, the 1:1 looks the business and this build does too. You've seriously developed a style all your own that's as fantastic as your builds are clean. I am going to be sure to make it up to ATL so I can see these in life.

I'll do my part to get my thread back in the right direction before Mike opens up his can of whoopass on us.
I finally had a chance to get some painting done tonight. Every piece of the kit is in it's base color, and ready for detail painting. I did not plan to do much detailing under the hood, but I just had to add some more carbon fiber. I'll be adding it to the roll bars, dash, center console, and a couple of boxes in the engine bay. Also I'll be converting the soft-top that came in the kit to a CF hard-top.
Here's a better shot of the headlights/front end. I dabbed a bit of smoke in the projecter headlight.

Intake plenum, and driveshaft in carbon fiber.
http://images9.fotki.com/v172/photos/4/431166/2223929/Viper16-vi.jpg
I placed BMF on the 'Viper' script on the valve covers before painting. I'll polish off the paint, and expose the foil. (Thanks for the tip Mach1_2003)
If it doesn't work well, I'll strip the paint and carbon fiber them.

I placed BMF on the 'Viper' script on the valve covers before painting. I'll polish off the paint, and expose the foil. (Thanks for the tip Mach1_2003)
If it doesn't work well, I'll strip the paint and carbon fiber them.

Glad to see your stellar work on this kit. It's a good one and more proof that Revell does still have their heads screwed on straight.
Honestly, though, painting and carboning (cool, I just made up a word) the separate side panels seems a little hokey. Could you imagine doing the same thing on, say, Tamiya's Jaguar XJ220?
Not necessarily harping on your skills as a builder - after all, I do happen to approve of your building  - but knowing the kit, it kind of feels like you took the easy way out and it looks just a little hokey.

looks good. just a side note. i've been around and involved in the production of carbon fiber, fiberglass, and kevlar products. I am in the process of getting a job, working with the engineers at Cytec Engineered Materials, in greenville texas. :D

It looks absolutely fantstic!!! Having just purchased an SRT-10 I am going to buy a model and pattern it after your build! I am very impressed and I am glad youa re taking an adult attitude toward the naysayers who, most often, are not quite old enough enough to drive the real things yet.

Wow.... EXTREMELY well said Matt!!!!! Cant wait to discuss this guy in Atlanta in November with you!!! Lookin Superb!! :grinyes:

Some people just can't see the fact that others want to build how they want. Why can't everyone just keep their opinoins to themselves if they are bad or agaist how other want to build their models.
Once again amazing job so far.
Because my friend, this is a public forum and if people post their models on it they should expect both positive and negative comments and if they can't handle the negatives then they shouldn't put their models on in the first place.
However this time the negative comments were unfounded and it was fun watching CADguy and co tear that guy apart. :)
On the other hand I think Tonio's 'build what you want, who cares what people think' attitude can sometimes be damaging. Yes, sometimes peoples opinions are wrong but more often than not its fair criticism and postive criticism is a very useful tool.
Back to topic, I think that Viper looks awesome and that combination of silver and gunmetal looked better (IMHO), than when you put the CF on. It still looks good, its just I'm personally not a big fan of CF hoods but still the paint looks great and the CF was applied immaculately.
Great job!
Cheers
Farrokh
P.S. Leave the Viper alone and finish that Dino! ;)

Whoa, when did this thread pop up out of no where?
I haven't seen this kit at Hobby Lobby yet. :frown:
Is the fitment very good and what was the price you paid on the kit?
Also did you use plain weave on the hood?
When I get this kit I going to do the same thing but in WHITE!
Anyways this is going to be probably my favorite domestic here on AF!
Can't wait for more progress :iceslolan

I got my kit for $10 from the Model Roundup here in town; though Hobby Lobby had them last week (saw 'em during their 1/2 off sale where you could have gotten it for about $6 or $7 or so)...though not all Hobby Lobbys have the best selection-one here locally has a terrible selection, while another one I visited had all the new issues from Revell and AMT.
The fitment on the kit seems quite good, I've seen one built and the guy said he had zero problems w/it.
Mine will be white, but w/o any c/f. I've already painted the interior pieces red that need to be red, and painted all sub-assemblies except for the body.

Thanks for all the comments on this build. It sure became a lot more interesting and fun in a really short time.
SidewayzS15: I used model masters non-buffing aluminum metallizer on the engine and intake and other various parts.
After much careful thought I think Layla's keeper and ThePerfectGetaway were right. The sides in CF do look hokey. (I also think the word hokey is just a bit..well.. hokey :)) And a CF hood on a Viper is just plain un-Amurican, by gawd!
I stripped off the CF in alcohol today, and have them back to plastic ready for primer and silver paint.
http://images9.fotki.com/v180/photos/4/431166/2223929/Viper17-vi.jpg
The only reason I had added CF to the sides was due to a painting error. My primer was thin, and I sprayed the lacquer paint on a bit to heavy and crazed the plastic. I'll lay the primer on thicker this time, and have a plain jane Viper. I will probably keep the custom wheels, I don't really like the kit wheels.
Thanks again for looking!

What?? I can agree that the sides were a bit much, but the hood/decklid looked pretty damned cool, as did the car you were using as inspiration.
At least now you can paint the inner fron fender duct (louvered area) black.

I'm with Bob. The decklid and hood look cool, and the sides would've looked cool if you'd continued the carbon onto the body proper or into the coves.
Just carboning the separate bits of the body was what I was coming down on you for. :nono:

Thanks for the tip Carnut04.
I didn't really strip off the hood and sides, I was just having a bit of fun, to see what kind of response I'd receive.
I did however do a bunch of work to it this evening.
I completed the underside of the hood sometime ago, and never photo'd it. I used BMF over the Viper emblem, then painted the black, and then polished the paint off of the high spots and gave the snake some red eyes.
http://images9.fotki.com/v180/photos/4/431166/2223929/Viper17-1-vi.jpg
I also used BMF on the air intake, and cut around the 'V-10 505' script.
http://images9.fotki.com/v188/photos/4/431166/2223929/Viper18-vi.jpg
The Viper script on the valve cover came out fairly well.
http://images10.fotki.com/v191/photos/4/431166/2223929/Viper19-vi.jpg
I added CF accents to the dash. This still needs detail painted, and the gauge decals added.
http://images10.fotki.com/v192/photos/4/431166/2223929/Viper20-vi.jpg
The door panels each received some CF accent.

Mock-up of the interior
http://images9.fotki.com/v188/photos/4/431166/2223929/Viper22-vi.jpg
I finished converting the softop to a hardtop. I need to order some more of the carbon fiber decal that I used on the hood and sides to add to this part. The sides I think look much better with a roof on the car.
