engine swaps

Hi,
Is there some kind of cross reference book or website where I can find out what engines I can swap into my 1993 Saturn SC2 / 5 spd / DOHC / 185K miles 1.9? I have read that other people are doing it, but I need some direction. Ideally, I would like to put a lower mileage and/or higher performance engine in, but have no idea what makes sense. Also, I have read that it is not recommended to get a rebuilt Saturn engine due to thin wall cylinder construction making rebuilds not last too long. Any advice would be appreciated.

93 and 94 DOHC engines would be a direct swap, 95-02 lower ends will work but not the cylinder heads(unless you swap PCMs). mid 99-02 lower ends have thicker block constrution, longer connecting rod(pistons redesigned to match), and a better balanced crankshaft. if you buy a used/junkyard engine, an engine that was mated to an automatic engine is perfered, due to the fact manual transmissons tend to wear the thrust bearing faster then automatic transmissions. i have heard of warnings about rebuilt engines before and cylinder walls, not only saturn engines but any brands, i have yet to see it backed up with proof, the 1.9 liter is built solid.

also you can use a 91 or 92 head, just not the lower end, due to a change to toner ring for the CPS on the crankshaft.

the reason you can not use a 95+ cylinder head is due to the EGR mounting, 95+ used a electric EGR as well as a few 94s. where the rest of the 94s and 91-93 used a vaccum EGR. the few 94s with a electric EGR used an adapter plate instead of a different head. if you buy a 94 with the electric EGR, just remove it and the adapter plate(resell them and make a few pennys) then clean and reuse your old EGR.

i would also concider replacing the timing chain and components, and up dating the ECT if needed on any new/used engine.
