i dont get why people hate them so much, i mean they talk about how they are gas hogs, but the people who say that forget to include.......exotic cars like the lambo murcielago....9 in the city and 13 highway :screwy: ........trucks, the get shitty gas mileage, also alot of V8 powered cars?....and plenty of other cars.....i mean they have their right to not like them, but if ur gonna talk about it gas wise, dont forget to include other cars

How many exotics do you see on the road? Exactly so shut up. I hate SUV's because they seem to get bigger and bigger. They are ugly as sin, and you can never see past them. They are not safe, and I don't get the feeling of safety when I'm in one. Quite frankly I'm even scared to drive them because they are just so big and clumsy I feel like I'm going to flip over or plow into something.

I agree. It just feels un-natural sitting in one. I have noticed they also have the most difficult time slowing down or stopping.

They are dangerous to people who are in them, because of their massively high center of gravity and proneness to rollovers. More imporantly, they're dangerous to other non truck and SUV drivers because they weigh a LOT, and they take up a lot more road than smaller vehicles. How many people actually use SUV's for what they're built for? Not many...most SUV's are daily driven by poeple who commute. They are completely unnecessary, and a danger everyone on the road. I get very uncomofortable driving around SUV's.

http://media.ebaumsworld.com/carcrash.wmv

Now lookie at the little dood running there on the left hand side. If that had been a pinto, geo, or plastic saturn, he could have stood still and the car would have gone through him.

The thing I despise about SUVs is that in a regular CAR, or even in another SUV, you can't see around them AT ALL. I HATE hate hate driving behind SUVs because I cannot see around them at all. I feel SO unsafe being behind one. I ca'nt see brake lights, I've got no idea what's in front of that guy, if he's braking and speeding, or if he just slams the brakes randomly... no idea why. I stay WAY back from SUVs and I STILL can't see jack crap. Same with vans and Trucks, but it's the worst with SUVs because that huge covered back doesn't hardly let you see even peripherally.

I think you just summed up why people hate people who drive SUV's. Because what you just said is the reason why most people buy SUV's. People buy them so they can drive a monster truck that protects them in an accident while destroying everything else. SUV's were orginally created for off-road purposes (i.e. Jeep) or to be used like a truck for towing while hauling a bunch of people around (original Suburban). SUV's today, with the exception of a few, do either of the reasons mentioned.

NEVER. Plus, to drive a semi, you have to get a different license. One that makes sure you actually know how to handle a semi.

A semi is being driven by a specially licensed driver and the truck he's driving is that big in order to haul enormous cargo that's vital the nations economy. Little Miss Soccer Mom doesn't need a 7000 lb. vehicle to drop her kid off at school.

Why haven't you followed the advice I gave you earlier yet?

You are giving all the reasons people hate SUV's, you just don't know it.

The fact is, the people are not bullet prrof behind the wheel of them, in fact very rarely are you safer in them than you are in a well-designed family saloon.

They use an unbelievable amount of gas and this IS a huge problem due to the huge numbers of them about being used needlessly.

And then they needlessly block the vision of other road users who wisely chose a proper car.

SUV's have two purposes
1. Off roading
2. Towing

They are not for dropping your one kid off at school, nor are they for driving fat asses to work and back.

You see, it's when it starts to effect others that weren't involved in the choice where the problem is created.

For example, I hate Toyota Corolla's, I think they are the epitomy of automotive mediocrity, but if someone buys one and drives around in it, I can't really complain, because it really doesn't effect me in any one way, I can see around it and it probably won't do me much harm in an accident.

If someone buys a Ford Expodition (This doesn't happen in Europe, but it happens elsewhere), then I have a right to complain, because thier choice DOES effect me. It affects my visibility on the road, it puts me in far more danger in a collision due to the fact that it has bumpers that over-ride my cars crumple zones. Not cool at all.

I'll certainly give a consideration to those who need to two 7 ton trailers, or need the ground clearance to get into a construction site etc. But I'd like to see a special license be granted to drive an SUV at the very least, because it is NOT a car.

HHHHHmmmmmmmmm, some excellent points all around. My take on it [I own a Jeep cherokee and a GA and an Eagle Premier]. I'm fairly fortunate in that I can have three rides, or maybe not, the insurance kills me, lol.

Yes, the SUV's were really made for towing and off-roading and bad-weather conditions. They suck on gas. They are big, hard to see around, unstable in corners at speed. Their bumpers usually will override a smaller car's bumpers [but isn't that the manufacturer's fix?] They don't stop as fast. They seem a real waste of resource for one person to use them as a daily driver. They impact the economy and the environment and the roadways.

They are sadly purchased by people who do not know how handle them, for their intened purpose.

But, I can also say, better over-road visibility, 4wd for snow-laden roads, and hauling some idiot out of the ditch cuz they couldn't drive their little car right.

So, in the end, it all means nada.

I think SUVS almost provide no real purpose since now every freaking truck has the extended cab or 4 dour cab, proving the SUV completely useless since the truck has space to put crap in, enough towage capability and hey the same gas mileage, BUT you can see around the damn thing and still be able to "Pimp" it out like an suv.

05-23-2005, 07:38 PM
Bottom line: SUV's suck. Today's view of the SUV is a showroom-condition Escalade sitting on 24"s in a suburban driveway. The SUV no longer has any off-road capability, and if it did, no one would ever be in a situation where AWD is needed. I saw a rare sight today: A Hummer H2 with mud splattered all over it, and it was towing a trailer!!!! Truly a rare sight. The gas issue is the biggest factor in hating SUV's. If it takes nearly a hundred bucks to fill your gas tank every other day, you need to buy something better. And who needs seating for 10 passengers when nearly all SUV owners are single or have very few kids? If the oil crisis continues, every SUV will need to be taken off the road in favor of a hybrid. DESTROY THEM NOW i say. FUCK SUV's. They will all go to Hell for wasting so much of our precious fuel.

You can make an argument about nearly every car on the roads good and bad points. Unless you own stock in all the car manufacturers, this argument makes about as much sense as pissin' in the wind. Uhh, actually, it will change shit. As soon as people start realizing that SUV's are worthless pieces of garbage and consequently stop buying them, manufacturers will begin to notice. For the vast majority of SUV owners, there's absoutely no reason to buy them, for all of the points already stated. The argument thrown in by Yogs that people buy them because they can is indicative of much greater problems in the US, mainly that people don't give a rat's ass about the effects their actions have on others and the environment. But once gas prices increase, and the bulge in their wallets doesn't bulge so much, only then will an alternative be considered.

The suv is unstable at corners at speed, well then don't fucking speed when cornering (both for the suv driver as the regular driver). Its not a matter of the suv who can't handle the vehicle, its everyone. Statistically if you look over the highway account of accidents, there are more regular passenger car accidents than there are suv ones. The bottom line is that the suv is here to stay and is quickly taking over as the prefered choice to replace the minivan as the mode of transportation for numerous families, be they soccer moms or the average joe. ^ So true. Shoot my Santa Fe is the same height as the Dodge Caravan or the Chrysler pacifica. Now true there are some suvs that are really tall in height, yet there are loads of vehicles on the road that are high and obstruct the regular passenger vehicles' view of the road, such as all those school buses. Not only are they tying up traffic, but they make me late coming into work. What about all those Fed Ex and UPS trucks, what about other delivery trucks etc, they are also big. Plus, all those that I just mentioned love to keep their vehicles in idle while dropping off their passengers or items. So who's using more gas at that point.

What about all those yellow cabs (here in NYC), while not as tall in height, they clog up Manhattan (and only Manhattan, lord knows they are hardly ever elsewhere except at the airports). They alone drive like its a drag strip out there. Alot of the time I see them empty. They use loads of gas and they tie up traffic.

Like I said before, if everyone obeyed the rules of the road and knew how to drive the vehicle they are in, we wouldn't have so many problems or accidents. I use my suv to carpool, yet I see the same amount of passengers (that I take in my suv) are in their own vehicles driving to work. Whos using more gas? I laugh at the folks that complain that the suv is using up too much precious fuel. Well newsflash, so are you in your fuel efficent vehicle, you too are using gas. Instead of being hypocrites, give up your vehicles and take mass transit. But you won't now would you, I did not think so. Good points TS, you use your SUV intelligently, getting 10mpg with 6 people in there. The little car getting next to you with just one person is getting 40mpg. Who's smarter? You are, since over 40 miles you'll use about 2/3 of a gallon per person, while he's using a full gallon for himself.

I think where all the bitching comes in is when SUV's are used unintelligently, such as in the case of the "soccer mom", who drops off her one child at the game, goes to have her hair done, stops for gas, gets a couple things at the store, picks up her kid and heads home in her 9mpg SUV. She should be driving something more efficient.

Soccer mom doesn't need the huge SUV and never will; she has it as a status symbol. (as a side note she's also doing her makeup and on the phone while swerving all over the road being a hazard to everyone else, but that's another thread). "Bigger is better" is her motto.....
