people who hate suv's

Good points TS, you use your SUV intelligently, getting 10mpg with 6 people in there. The little car getting next to you with just one person is getting 40mpg. Who's smarter? You are, since over 40 miles you'll use about 2/3 of a gallon per person, while he's using a full gallon for himself.

I think where all the bitching comes in is when SUV's are used unintelligently, such as in the case of the "soccer mom", who drops off her one child at the game, goes to have her hair done, stops for gas, gets a couple things at the store, picks up her kid and heads home in her 9mpg SUV. She should be driving something more efficient.

Soccer mom doesn't need the huge SUV and never will; she has it as a status symbol. (as a side note she's also doing her makeup and on the phone while swerving all over the road being a hazard to everyone else, but that's another thread). "Bigger is better" is her motto.....

I couldn't agree more with that statement. When used for what they were intended, SUVs are great vehicles, and really quite useful...it's the "in crowd" who needs to show off to the Jones' that get me pissed off...you don't need a Suburban to shuttle yourself around town as I see all too often around here.

Been hit by a car at 40mph? Been clipped by an SUV at 40mph? The car did significantly LESS damage to occupants in both vehicles.

Actually...
I've been hit with an Avalon and been hit with a Suburban. Both at the same part of my car. I got T-Boned both times. Front quarter panel/door. The Avalon was going faster when it hit me. The avalon did 9 grand worth of damage, and the Suburban did 12. That's just to the cars, not including medical bills. It was 1 year and 3 months apart, I was driving the exact same car both times. The difference: My back has been in chronic pain since the Suburban accident... 6 months ago. Right after the accident, I couldn't breathe. I actually never said a word to the person that hit me; just gave him my information and left. (We never called the cops.) I ended up having to go to the emergency room an hour later. I have to go see a chiropractor 3 times a week, at $25 a pop. I can't maintain a position that's not sitting or standing for an extended period of time (i.e. laying across a couch, laying on a surface that's mildly uneven, crouching, relaxing, etc) and pending 2 sets of x-rays, two chirporactors said I have the same amount of spinal deformation as a 65 year old man. (i.e., it's twisted and moved. doesn't mean it's degraded or I've lost spinal fluid or anything) The top four vertebre of my spine (basically, my neck, right above my collarbone) are rotated almost ninety degrees and as a result, at any given time during the day, my back is actually throbbing with pain, which tenses up my muscles. I've just got to live with the pain and they say I'm going to have all sorts of back problems in the future.

Hey, Illegal_eagle. See how twospirits gave real examples why he liked SUVs? For future reference, that's much more effective. Grow up.

There's more cars on the road than SUVs, for one thing. That generally means there will be more car accidents than SUV accidents.

And large vehicles such as Armored cars, FedEx trucks, and School Busses are a) performing a direct purpose, and are used for nothing BUT that purpose b) not production level. You don't just run out to the bus, hop in, and take a quick trip to McDonalds. They are a dozen times as scarce as SUVs, and their operators are a) DOING something with the large vehicles. b) almost always have to have special licenses to operate them.

Staying car lengths back away from the SUVs still does not provide peripheral vision around them. Unless you're going around a turn, and that's under optimal conditions, you can't see around them.

People aren't complaining that SUVs are going to brake too quickly and we'll run into the back of them. This isn't about everyone speeding everywhere; it's a matter of safety. They're complaining that a collision with an SUV causes more damage and is potentially more dangerous than a collision with another car. Some SUVs set higher (not all) and can miss crumple points in cars, which can be very hazardous. Bigger->More inertia->More damage. Just about the most basic physics.

They aren't arguing about people who use them responsibly, like carpooling and towing trailers. People are saying that SUVs, as a type, consume much more gas than other cars. There's exceptions, but generally, they just do. Pretend two identical single males, each buy seperate respective cars: one buys an Escalade, and one buys a Civic. Neither drives them with regular passengers (i.e. carpool) and neither tows anything. Both live in regular seasonal conditions, so it snows a little. mostly, it doesn't. There is no doubt that the Civic will get much better gas mileage and consume many less gallons of gas if both vehicles are driven regularly.

I just want to clear this up. So it's okay for SUV's to be used to carry loads or lots of people or trailer something, but not okay for just one person to be driving it? What if one person drives the SUV daily, but uses it as a hauler for their boat or other on the weekend? Is that okay or no it needs to be one or the other?

Buy a gas-saver for your mundane daily-daily, and use the SUV for the important things

I think people just dont use em for what they're really made for.Thats all i was trying to say. For example a H2 commercial............(there are some places/people that have use for them) where the hell am i going to be able to used a suv strictly for what it is used for? My backyard? Don't get me wrong, I like them but it is not a neccesity(?) right now

Its funny because an Escalade is meant for off roading and mudding or what not but it costs so damn much no one ever does it.

drewh4386
05-26-2005, 02:20 AM
Funnier because Escalades seem more like Limos it me.

Rally Sport

Limos? Escaldes are really meant to go mudding.

"what point to go mudding without all the luxuries? You know, DVD, Navigation, sound system etc......."

The DVD is there if you get stuck, so is the sound system and the navigation system is there to know where you got stuck.

I dunno? I mean theoretically, you could get a little car to do your daily driving. My father has a boat and he hauls it to a lake every weekend with his Expedition. He also drives it 5 miles to work every day when he's not hauling. I guess it's useless but theoretically, other cars are gas hogs as well, it's just that there's more SUVs in existance. a lot more. and they're more accessable to anybody. But I know my dad bought it specifically for hauling the boat. They could never really haul it with their minivan, so they got something with more power and more storage capacity. My mother has a little Escape. It gets better gas mileage than my little MR2. She doesn't haul MUCH with it, but it's awfully handy for packing shit up in. I knew a girl back in high school whose parents bought her a brand new 2002 Suburban @ almost $40,000. She drove it to school and to parties to do a lot of coke. And after she wrecked it (no idea how much damage she did to the other guy,) her parents bought her a brand new Land Rover. It's that kind of thing that isn't really appropriate.

Not everybody can afford a car for hauling and a car for just driving. The size of the vehicle and the amount of gas they chugg ain't a vallid argument. A corvette doesnt haul anything but ass at high speeds and get shitty gas mil. A large car like a Chevy Caprice getts shitty gas millage I know, I had one and my 97 S-10 Blazer getts better mpg than both of the above cars.

The newer Corvettes actually get pretty close to 25-30mpg.

They do. My aunt and uncle drove theirs to Alabama and said at an avg of 80 mph averaged 29mpg. That's damn good.

lamehonda
05-26-2005, 05:21 PM
Then why the hell are you driving it 80 mph. Its an SUV not a sports car. :nono:
I live in Wyoming. We have 75 mph speed limits on most roads that I drive on. SUVs suck on at these speeds. Hard to stop and no passing power at speed. You have to have a sports car to go 80? :loser:

maybe not a sports car, but pretty much a car.
That reminds me of the last time I was in Denver. A 50 y/o lady in an Escalade was driving 5 feet off of a Corvettes bumper doing over 105 while talking on a cellphone. Like it or not the increased stopping distances required by these cars has to cause idiots like this to get into more accidents.

i see people complain about suv's not being used the way "they should"...off-roading, towing, carrying lots of people..and so on.......but how is that really any different than somebody not using the car they bought for what it was intended for.....like for instance...i know people who have camaro ss, corvettes, they dont drive them fast (which really is what they are made for, correct me if im wrong, what the point in having that much power if ur not gonna use it, its like the suv, they may use it for daily driving, hauling no people, but they have it, just incase they need to haul people, tow something or driving in a rugged area visiting uncle tony or grandma and grandpa.....same goes for economy cars, like the civic, and others like that, they werent made for fullblown racing, but people do it anyways, so thats my 2cents.....again

I got a good story for you. A friend of a friend got for her 16th birthday a bright yellow H1. Pretty badass (if you live on a mountain). She lives in Dallas. She totals it. I don't know how to total an H1 but she did it. So gets a second hummer. Totals it. So thats 2 $100,000 vehicles down the tubes. Ok, so here's the good part. Her next car, her parents by her a brand f%$king new candy apple red Ferrari 360 Modena. When i heard this i felt like screaming out the stupidity of people(and started crying for a soon to be trashed ferrari). I just can't believe that shit.
