Quick question:
What is the idle speed of a '99 SL2, specifically the fast idle? The fast idle on my wife's SL2 is around 1900 according to the tach, that seems pretty fast to me.
thanks,

How long does it stay there?
Id expect it to be around 1300, but under 2K isn't that bad, as long as it evens out fairly quick, say within 10 seconds

I figure it takes about 3-4 mins before it begins to slow down to standard idle, which appears to be around 600-800 rpm.

Whats the temperture outside like?
Does it diesel when you cut it off? (kinda chug along for an extra couple of seconds)
The normal things to look at are the ECTS (Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor), and the IAC (Idle Air Control Valve) and TB (Throttle Body)
Clean the IAC and TB, and replace the ECTS with a brass tip one from saturnparts.com or a saturn dealership

My wife parks in a heated garage, and we see the problem whenever we start it after it has been parked for quite a while.
It is an auto.
I guess I expect the high idle to only last for 30 secs or so at around 60 degrees, but it can last for 4 mins. I also wouldn't expect it to be so high.
I'm going to try the initial idea of cleaning the Throttle Body/Air Control Valve this week sometime to see if that helps.

Hey all, last weekend I cleaned the throttle body, and things seem to be better. The current functionality I'm observis is.
At start the vehicle idles at approx 1300rmp, the idle speed then slowly starts decreasing until it reaches operating temp, and at that time it idles at around 800rpm.
Does this sound like proper functionality for the system?

Both pics are with the TB top up, the arrow points to the IAC, remove it to clean the pintle (the part with the spring wrapped around it)
It should be clean and dull silver, not black, you'll notice very quickly when you start spraying it with carb cleaner, its pretty self explanatory

The TB would be attatched to the end of the tubing in the top of this photo (obviously not installed) (never mind the circle and arrow they were for the intake resonator thread)

also start the engine right away after you clean it, you want the carbon to be burned off by the engine before it can settle again.

Or better yet, remove the TB and IAC to clean them,
