We had the 'check engine' light of our Windstar tested. The result showed we needed a speed sensor. We have the new speed sensor, but are unable to figure out where the old sensor is located. We can't see it from above or below. How do we locate the old sensor? Also, how does the speed sensor function in emissions control?

Welcome.
On my 1995 3.8L,it is located on the back side of the motor/transaxle, under the rear exhaust manifold. It is just inboard of the rear passenger side engine mount. I can't see how to get at mine except to remove the rear manifold. There's just one bolt holding it on there, maybe with a 2 ft socket extension you could manage to pull it straight out toward the drivers side of the engine compartment? Is your motor a 3.8?

Hi
CoachKarl described the location well - Mine is a '96 with the 3.8L. I have read on these pages that one way to get at it is to loosen the rear subframe bolts a couple of inches. I have not replaced my VSS so I am just passing on what I have read. I have removed my subframe bolts to replace the bushings. They are long bolts and you can probably drop them 2-3" without backing them completely out. If you are unfamiliar with the subframe - there are four subframe bolts/bushings located underneath at the four corners of the engine/transmission compartment. They are large (14-16mm) bolts in the center of "donut" shaped bushings. If you back off the two rears, the whole shabang will lower a bit and may give you some clearance.

Also, make sure you are careful with the VSS heat shield as I understand that exhaust heat can cause VSS failure.

Best of Luck
