Sorry I dont have an answer for you, Sierrap will I'm sure,

But as a side question, My buddy totaled his '96 SC2, will the head fit my '97 SL1 ok?

And what else is needed off the '96? (I have very limited time, the insurance company is going to come get the car from the shop pretty soon)

i have to do a motor swap the 96 sl2 has no compression in number 3 and i get my motors for cheap. so it is cheaper for me to do a motor swap then a head repair .so i found a late 94 model sl2 to get the motor out of,

I understand your question...and I don't get my motors for cheap, but this ones head is going to be free,

The Side Question Is My Own Question I Needed To Post,
But this seemed like an apropriate thread, judging by the thread name, since I'd be swapping in a '96 head,

Sierrap615 is a member I trust that posts most of the tough to answer or technical questions responses, I was expecting him to answer both of our questions with no problem...thus the reason it is a side question

the 96 has 174 000 miles on it and the 94 has 138000 miles the motor is 100 dallors that is why i do engine swaps instead of changing the haed becacuse of the price . the engine ine the 94 is good because it was wrecked and the air bags are blown and the damage is not into the motor.

the 94 engine will fit in the 96 frame no problem, use the 96 transmission, pcm, wiring, manifolds, EGR, and assessorys if you can. if both engines have the linear EGR you will not need to buy an adaptior plate, as it is already on the head. one sender on the head will be left disconnected. flush out the coolant system with water twice or until pure then fill with green coolant. grab the coolant cap off the 94 if the 96 cap has a pink dot on it.

the 96 DOHC will fit on a 97 SOHC you will need the manifolds, wiring harness, PCM, powersteering pump(i think), if you have an auto transmission the trans will need swaped. if you have a 5-speed its not needed, but the gear ratios will better fit the torque curve, plus i may be in need of a SOHC manual trans soon(or parts of it), but if you can, swap the whole motor not just the head.

Thanks, knew you'd come through,

If I can help it I'm going to keep trannies/engine blocks in place, too much work for an afternoon or two,

:sigh: I think even then I'll probably not be able to get at all the parts I need without getting his insurance company pissed, they've already settled with him, and the guy who runs, the shop where the car is waiting for the insurance company to pay him/pick it up, was pissed at our last trip out there when I pulled the ECTS (hoping it was good, it wasn't) and got coolant goin half way across the parking lot...
But I did snag the TB, dimmer switch, gauge bezel, vents, PCV valve, relays, pretty much anything that I could grab that fit my car...

My buddy has a set of aftermarket gauges from out of the car, they are the 6 color white face gauges with the Saturn emblem on the tach, they change between 3 shades blue, 3 shades green, and white, on a switch, They are from a '95 DOHC (130MPH)
I know he is looking to sell them but he has not discussed a price with me, they will fit in a '95-'97 DOHC
Here is an example of the gauges, ebay gauges (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7970612324&category=33677&sspagename=WDVW)

cali emissions happened LONG before schwarz. for the longest time(and still today somewhat) cali has had the worst smog.

BTW - i've seen a prototype hyrdogen H2 - it still gets crappy mileage.
