wanting brights on same time as low beams. please help

I thought the bright beams (operating at 6v when in driving mode during the day) would look cool with my low beams on at the same time.. but during the night

so basically have the 9006's runing full brightness, and the 9005's at 6v, just like during the day

how can i wire a switch to do this

Thank You, Thank You...Please hold your applause 'till the end. ;)

I knew this would work and I'm VERY suprised no one else had tried or asked about it!

Yes it was a ground that activated the relay (thanks cbeck) so that was much more simple than trying to run a hot (+) wire.
Although the space was tight and wire strippers (and my arms) barely fit I managed to pull it off (wire stripper pun). :)

I did not go through the top of the dash to get to the Instrument Panel wires though (sierrap). This seemed too difficult and instead i just slid underneath the steering wheel and found where the wires ran away from the I/P (up high but directly above the accelerator pedal), located the light green / black striped wire -cut it, -stripped it, -and ran an extention from each side down to my switch (relay side of the grn/blk wire to the middle contact), and a ground to the third contact on the switch, then soldered all points

cbecks drawing helped tremendously as it shows the correct way to wire up the "center off" switch
http://www.usabecker.com/images/switch.JPG

My DRLs now function 3 ways as I see fit,
1. normally as controlled by the relay...
2. never on...
3. and (my favorite) on whenever I want them on including with the headlights on or e-brake up!

This is my favorite mod yet done to my saturn perhaps because I (am the first to have) pulled it off or maybe because I've wanted to do this since I got the car

as promised I will post the pics if i get a reply/request or will gladly e-mail them to anyone with questions

i can't decide whether everyone should do this because its so great
or no one so I'm the only one out there with fog/DRls LOL

Well its either way now, with the info readily available it should be no time before I see someone elses saturn on the road with headlights and DRLs on

Ok you can applaud now ;)
Or read where this came from here (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=329041)

heh, yea. i read that over and over and was having just a little hard time. with the drawing, i didnt know where 592 and the relay were. is there another drawing? something that like, shows where they relay's, and all the otehr stuff is.. or is it as simple as your post?

Its pretty simple,
592 is the side of the green/black wire that runs towards your instrument panel,
the relay is on the other side of the wire and the relay is under the hood in the fuse panel, DRL relay

It was pretty easy to do, and I love using them, mostly for flashing at slow drivers :cwm27:

I have now posted the pics in My Gallery (http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=278444)

Here is the one thats probably most helpful, read the description (http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=41719&password=&sort=1&cat=500&page=1)

Remember you need an on-off-on switch, not just a switch that has 3 prongs, I had to return one... and couldn't find one I really liked...

It should be rated as DC12V at 15A
Not AC120V at 5A (well it can be but you need to wire up a 15A fuse in line)
These are the two types of on-off-on switches I found at Radio Shack,
The AC switch looked alot cooler, but was alot smaller including the contacts the wires attach to,

i went and got the switch before i read the post. what i got was:

on-off-on 35 amp chrome toggle

made by Conduct Tite. model 85983

found here: http://www.motormitedormancatalog.com/item.wws?qty=1&mfr=MOTORMITE&sku=85983&price=&cookieID=1I40XKKVW1I40XKVRD

will this work?

Yes, an on-off-on or "center off" switch will work fine if rated greater than 15A

The attributes from your link say that it will work fine, but the picture is the wrong switch (notice that the one in the picture only has an on and off position) yours should have three positions when you click it back and forth, the one in the picture has 2

Also, if I were you I'd mount the switch a little higher than mine is mounted, I have to kinda bend over to reach it,

BTW you can either solder your connections if you have an iron and know how to use it,
OR using crimpers you can use crimp on butt connections to connect your wires, and crimp on quick disconnects for the wires to the switch's prongs,

actually. yea, mine has the 3 switches. and i was going to mount it on the opposite side of the light dimmer on the gague panel. theres a nice open area there. but, i was under my dash and above the gas pedal and i couldnt find the wire. i did find a little set of wires, which, one of was green. but there was no black striping. then there was the other colors as well, brown, yellow, and so on. i didnt make any cuts, because i was not sure. hopefully i can get a HQ pic of it to show you. i am in a SW1 btw

I went out with a flashlight and took 3 more pics of the wires,

go back to my gallery (http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=278444), and go to sort by latest, the pics are edited for size, and added brightness and clarity

If you are having a problem locating the wires, try opening the top of the dash to locate them, I didn't go through the trouble, there should be alot of wires in the area, including a drk grn/black wire, and a light green wire, make sure you clip and strip only the light green black striped wire.

Hope the pics help, and good luck with it, you can do it but it may take some work,

And just to make sure, I rechecked a wiring diagram, it should still be a light green/ black striped wire, for any model '97 and up,

Snapped a few more photos for ya since I got the chance

These show where the wire is when you take the dash top off,

wow. thats really nice of you. taking your dash off, just for me. i totally appreciate it man. that, awesome. i took my dash off the other day too, and was looking for the wire. its a good thing i didnt make cuts on the wite i thought it was.. its obviously the wrong one. the pic i took (which is on a different pc) was a verticle pic of the gas pedal, and a little wiring above it with the tape around it removed. well iv got a few hours today before work, im going to try to wire that up. ill probably just end up grounding it to a frame piece somewhere.

Sorry, wish I could take that kinda credit, but I did think about you while I had the dash top off to install this Carbon Fiber Gauge Bezel, (man that was a hell of an install, alot harder than I anticipated because I couldn't get the gauge panel all the way out,) wanted the chrome one, but this one was free
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/278444Image_812_1-med.jpg

I also installed these fog lights, and when I had the knee protector down to install the new switch, I pulled the 592 wire loose, so practically had to reinstall my DRL switch,

Nice, I like the white, did you use Krylon Fusion? or SEM/VHT and plastic primer? And when did you do it?

Good jobs on the vents and panel around the gauges, I'm going to do mine within the next week or so. Ive got the rest of the same pieces painted too

That Chrome switch looks good, good mounting location too,

You got cruise and power locks... Lucky

uh, i just used standard spray paint. its a flat white too. i really like my paint job. what i did was i created a 75 degree enviornment in my garage with heaters, and put a fan blowing on them so they dried fast. didnt sand it or anything.

and actually, on my vents, i painted the whole thing in the winter, without the steady temperature. and like, it was chipping so much i just scraped it all off, except for the actual vent part that moves. so its hard to describe, but its outlined in black, then the actual vent part is white, it looks really nice tho, even if it was a mistake at first.

Why bother?
The high beams have different patterns than the low. You'll add a lot of glare to the on-coming traffic - just like the morons with their fancy low quality "fog" or "driving" lights

I set mine up this way because I hated the look of a saturn with DRLs on during the day...I didn't like not having control over the lights coming on,

And its part of being unique,

BTW who cares about other people on the road, its my car and I can see better with my headlights, drls, and fog lights all on

If someone has brights shining at you, flash your brights, let them know what it feels like on your side,

This was one of the first mods I wanted to do to my car,

But the switch technically turns on the DRLs (high beams at half voltage) not the high beams. It makes a visible difference and lights up the middle of my low beam's pattern,

I guess "BTW who cares about other people on the road"
says it all....
