[QUOTE=bnaylor3400]If you read my 2 cents worth, I don't recall saying that a 17 inch wheel wouldn't fit but that the rubber has to be adjusted accordingly. You'd have to drop below a 50 series tire.

Actually no you wouldn't have to drop below a 50 series tires. I have 50 series tires on my Alero with 17 inch rims and they fit with no problem and there is no rubbing. I definetly think that you could fit 18's on and Alero however you would be looking at have tires that are 30-35 series but they definetly would fit. 20's how i think that it would be stretching it a little to much. Also I don't think that notifing your insurance is a bad thing if you are putting mods into your car. For example if you put 3000 dollar stereo system in your car and someone rips you off and jacks your system insurance will not cover it, unless they are notified that you have in and the rates are adjusted to cover it. Just because you have insurance on your car does not mean that it cover every additional thing that you do. Insurance is there to cover that base price of the vehicle. Not any modifications that are done to the car. To cover those you would have to pay extra.

What brand tire and what size/width do you have? Our '02 Alero GL2 came stock from the factory with 50 series tires (Goodyear Eagle RSA P225/50R16 performance radials) and it doesn't make sense to maintain that aspect ratio even going to 17 inch wheels. There is only one finger distance between the inner tire edge and the strut but the larger aftermarket wheels compensate by offsetting this. The wheel is shifted out. The object is to maintain the closest tire diameter to the original, minimize speedo error, and not destroy the original handling of the car which in the case of a GL2 is excellent. I'm not into looks alone. Thats why I suggested going below 50 and if its means going to a range of 35 - 45 so be it. Give me your tires specs and I'll run it through my tire/wheel calculator.

Here's what I'm checking into:

Enkei DM5 5 spoke 17X7.5 wheels ($130.00)

Nitto NT555 Extreme 235/45ZR-17 tires ($118)

What do you think?

My tires are Ultra HPR Radial G/T 235/50R17 and at the skinnies point between the Tires and the wheel well it has at least 3 inches of space between the 2. I have RS limited Ricochets that are 17X7.5

The rims and the tires that you want to put on your Alero should be fine. You shouldn't have to worry about any rubbing what so ever.

Cficare68, can you do me a favor and check your clearance between the top inner part of your front tires in relationship to lower part of the strut and the bottom strut plate of the lower part of the coil spring on your Alero. What model do you have?

I'm running into a problem whereby the 235/45-17 tires may not fit the GL2 model. It has the RPO FE2 performance and handling package which means the struts are not the same versus a Alero GX, GL1, or GLS.
The 2002 Alero GL2 model is the only Alero for that year and subsequent years until 2004 that have that RPO package. Might have to drop down to 40 series in order to get them to fit. Thanks.

Sorry my brother has had my car for the last couple of days cause his is in the shop so i haven't been able to get the measurement that you have requested. However mine is a 99 GX so if there is a difference and the strut stick out your might want to go with the 40 series tire to be on the safe side
