Which side can I access the speed sensor? Driver or passenger? Please tell me I don't have to take it to a shop!

there is a speed sensor on each wheel. On the front it should be somewhere near where the axle slides through the hub

Well, I got it in there. Called a shop and the guy told me which side I could access it. What a bitch it was to get to, but it runs great now. For how long is the question.

Just to update exactly what I did, because this seems to be a common thing among this particular car, or with Ford/Mercury in general.
First, I'll tell you what symptoms were coming from the car. It always slipped a little when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. Eventually it got worse. After it warmed up the car would not shift out of first. I'd have to stop the car and put in park, wait a few seconds, then shift back in to drive and hope that it shifted out of first. If it did, it would continue to shift, but very hesitantly. The speedometer went dead, and came back alive frequently as well as the dreaded "CHECK ENGINE SOON" light.
The speed sensor I needed to replace sits right on top of the transmission, on the passenger side of the engine compartment. To get to it you need long arms to reach between the firewall, and the engine. I had to make sure the car sat for at least an hour to cool down. Otherwise it would be too hot to do the job. Make sure the negative battery cable is disconnected also. All I used was a ratchet with a 1/4" drive, a 6" extension, and a 9/32 socket I believe. All for one screw that holds it in place. Unplug the cable and it slides right out. Be careful to not let any debris fall inside the transmission. I went to Checker 3 times, the third time to return the wrong part, again. Went to Napa and got the part I needed the first time. $35 Hope this helps someone someday.
