Ok I just gotta ask you guys what do u think of the GM company?
well I'll say GM is Good or Bad as the rest...
one thing you guys have to take in consideration -
If something do get bad on a GM it is cheap and easy to get,
if you own lets say a 96 Toyota camry - a used engine will run u about $1200... for the motor only no labor
an avrage GM motor will run about $400
and from what i've seen around they all have problems. none of the
cars are perfect and trouble free... i don't care if it is a Hyundai or a mercedes... all have thier share of good and bad

I based my vote on the past history as well as today. Although presently GM is going through some bad times, it is hoped that they can turn things around and get back on track to producing vehicles of a caliber as the ones they made in the 50's to the early '70s.

GM is like any other super-large corporation, they'll have their ups and downs, fact is they help bring consumers affordable transportation. Voted Good.

first of all fuck gm. I don't get it? when you buy a car your in agreement with gm. I'll agree to pay monthly payments, in return you let me drive off with a sound well built car. this is very deceptive. since they don't keep there promise with a "sound and well built car" why should I keep my promise. why can i not pay every monthly payment. I think i should be able to miss a few payments to make up for money i've spent on repairs. let's face it, we all expect a few things to go wrong, alternator, shocks, brakes, even with a new car. these are simple 200$ repair jobs that the average consumer can AFFORD to fix. but when you get into 700$ intake gasket problem, 2500$ transmission problem, 2500$ engine problem, 500$ intermediate steering shaft problem, unexplained electrical problem costing 500$ every time you take it in. thats when they're flat out LYING to YOU! If they were upfront and said "hey before you buy this car you're gonna have these problems costing you 5000$+ but we still want you to keep up your end of the deal and pay every payment". would you still buy the car? HELLL NOOOO! I think the question of "do you like gm"? doesn't even need to be asked. WHO THE HELL WOULD LIKE SOME FACELESS MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR CORPORATION! unless you own it. or are a totall WORM!

The intermitted steering shaft was not a recalled part, the fuel pressure regulator was not a recalled part. The only way something will get recalled is if it's a safety problem with the car. Although you'd think being stranded out in the middle of no where with your kids would become a safety problem. I know the hazard switch was a safety problem and it wasn't recalled, i had to pay for it to be fixed. like 60 some bucks!!!
I totally agree with 3.4imp on the maintance thing. I don't mind replacing brakes and the oil changes and the tranny flushes and all that...thats called general maintance, it doesn't matter what kind of car you own. it's something you have to do. But ya....when they walk into the waiting area and they tell you the car you bought 3 months ago needs a intake manifold gasket, or the tranny needs new valves in it. for some people replacing the motor or the tranny on their cars that doesn't even have 50,000 miles on it is pretty ridiculous. If you can sit there and say that GM has their problems and blah blah blah, then drive my car for a few months...you will be calling me to come and pick it up because it's getting to expensive. It's pretty said when i have money put away because repairs are so damn expensive. If i had a nice well built car, i could be using that money on something else like a new motorcycle that i can't afford now because of this fucking car....I could have bought a nice motorcycle for 7500 bucks in which just went into repairs. It's just fustrating and if really annoying to sit here and listen to people say that what i'm going through is NORMAL and expected.

I dont know if you are dumb or pretending to be, you bought a new car and spend money fixing it, boy you are a dumb fuck.
you have a 36,000 3 years bumper to bumper warranty you crack head.
I bought a new GM car and did not spend a dime so far.
had a few repairs done by the dealer with no problems or complications.... not only that, i had a free oil change for the whole year.
unless you did something really wrong that voided your warranty, like abusing the car crashing it or hell knows what... but otherwise there is no reason in the world for the dealer not to repair the car for you with no cost to you.
whats more GM cars are coverd for any emmisions and computers defects for up to 80,000 miles or 7 years and there are some more things that covered more than 3 years... so open that little book they gave you with the car (yes it's important stuff in it like warranty and how to operate your vehicle - not to wipe your ass with) and read your rights dumb ass.... well thats unless you dont know how to read and i wasted my time writing all that....
and all you did probably messed up the car by yourself because you don't want to make the payments...

Fuel Pressure Regulator was a recalled part, I had it done for free not that long ago. They sent me a nice little flyer and everything about it. Cost me nothing but 20 minutes of my time.
Aside from recall parts and general wear and tear, I have had zero problems like you people who so ungodly hate GM. Sorry you have a bad car, no one forced you to buy it, you could have easily researched reliability and other such things on cars before buying.

Whoa. Maybe he did research and got a good report or two, paid serious money for a new car, made it through the warranty and the self destruct timer went off. The Impala should be rock solid for 100K miles, and most GM cars are for 200K for the most part. Seems to be a lot of unhappy GM owners these days for sure.

let me tell you, that "imp3.4" guy is one of those guys that have nothing to do just trush american cars. i've seen the same at the japanese cars forums but there done by american car supporters.
it's going on all over the place..
let me ask all you guys who read this.. if you bought a car lets say out of warranty, and you had to pay for all kinda problems after a short period of time, would you sell that car a.s.a.p or keep on droping money into it again and again and again like that guy claims...???
i think not... and that's why i say this imp3.4 guy is full of shit!
and if imp3.4 read this.... pal go to different forum trush some real junks like them new volkswagens. and if you did do a research you'll find out that most impala owners are very satisfied with the car. (don't you guys forget those are the cars that the law enforcement chose to serve because of durability and not looks..... altough they do look cool)

Lets not divert now fella's. This is an automotive forums, its supposed to be around for people that like their cars or just want some advice time to time. Lets not get a flame war brewing in here. I think we've all experieced bad cars time to time. I know i've seen nearly identical cars bought at the same time, one perform flawlessly for years on end, while the other became a pit. It just varies, can't control it all.

very well put. could not say it better!
many factors can cause a car to last longer or go bad sooner than expected.
lets not forget that GM sold around 280,000 impalas from 00 (I think 3rd or 4th most selling car). that's almost a million and a half cars,
it would be a freaking miracle if all worked flawlessly....
it is natural to find problems here and there.
all we have to do is post some common problem here and see what are
the solutions, that is what this forum is all about

impalaguy i think you need to do your research buddy because all the cops i have ever talked to tell me that their impala 9c1s are in the shop every month or two for something stupid, and every year for a transmission or work on a transmission. Stop defending GM man. They FUCKING SUCK.

do you know what a police car goes thru on a daily basis?????????
do you know the mileage they go every day? month? or year....
well it is about 10X the average car. not to say, jumping sidewalks, hard accelarations.... rough stoping... and who knows what other types of abuse.... how tha heck you put a police car to the test here???? i'm suprized those care don't go to the junkyard by the end of the day....
put an honda or a nissan to that torture and we'll see what happen... you'll have wheels flying after about 2 hours on the road..... ha ha
all i'm trying to say is that all cars have problems and if you go by what you say they all suck big time... all! japanese, european and american!
they just don't built them as good as they used to!
put it this way, if a customer buys a new car and use it for freakin 15 years we won't have any car companys in business today! not to mention - auto parts stores, junkyards, repair shops and the list goes on and on.... it is all about business and money...
i have cars from all manufacturers coming for repairs at the shop
there is no specific model that needs repair more than the other (well the new volkswagens really suck i must confess)
they all have their share.. and if you are not happy with your car pal sell it! no one on this planet force you to drive a car that you are unhappy with.. unless you have some kind of kink driving like that and posting coplaints all day long.....take care pal......

Look all I'm saying is that GM knows that once the warranty is up your car becomes a money pit and they love it. I'm not a sheep who's going to go with the flow, thats the reason we all get shafted because barely any1 says to other people "hey reconsider buying that type of a car, look at how they treat their customers".

Well as i said before they don't make them like they used too.... none
i don't care if it is american, japanese or european, they don't built them as strong as years ago!
thats why i suggest to do like i do....
don't get married with a car! change it after 3 years.
i lease them and replace them every 3 years.
i have a problem, i go to the dealer and get it fixed for free
when the 3 years go by. i turn the car in and get another one, as simple as can be and i'm happy as can be.....

If you paid $500.00 to have an intermediate shaft replaced, you paid 2.5 times too much. Maybe you need a NEW DEALER, not a different car! Maybe you have sucker written on your forehead, go look in the mirror. (it will be backwards, write it down and someone will read it back to you)

See the antifreeze in our Blazer is now starting to turn brown with brown streaks in it. Chevy had it figured just right. Out of warranty and now with 20K miles on it I'm looking at replacing the intake gaskets and flushing the cooling system and new antifreeze, my own nickel at this point. Their sawdust pills got it through the warranty just like they knew it would. Take a lesson here folks.

Where do you people come up with those stories?????
gees... are you kidding me or what?
if it really went bad after 20k they'll fix it for free!!
Some parts are even covered to 80k if you check.
but if "you" messed it up some how, and i've seen weird shit in my time that people do to brand new cars than you are screwed pal!
so please stop telling stories here!
looks to me like you caused a leak in your radiator some how maybe trying to change something and pinched the rad.. now you don't feel like replacing it so you pured some of that crap they sell over the counter to stop leaks, hoping it will stop the leak... but darn
that crap bonded to your engine cooling passeges, water pump and temp sensors which caused a poor cooling and wrong temp reading by the computer and thus causing overheating and head gasket failure!!!!
Stop adding over the counter crap pal.. I'm sorry but it looks like your fault now!

1)
Dex-cool does not cause intake manifold gaskets to fail in 4.3 V6 engine. The manifold gasket is made of 2 different materials. One of the materials shrinks over time, losing it's sealing ability, hence the gasket starts to leak. DO YOU REALLY THINK a company the size of GM would put Dexcool in virtually everything it built (not just Chevy) since 1995 if it caused cooling system damage? Why dont 4 cylinders leak? Why not V8s? Do you know the billions it would cost GM in warranty costs? The would have stopped using it as soon as it cost them too much warranty expense.
There is no such thing as a saw dust pill. GM (and other manufacturers) have used sealant tablets to seal small leaks since the 80's. It is an effective means to seal leaks between dissimilar materials.
2) GM will, can and does make what is called Policy adjustments based on a case by case basis. At my dealership we routinely go to bat for a customer with a valid out of warranty concern. I will tell you I'm more inclined to help a customer that A) bought the vehicle from us and B) gets the vehicle serviced with us. I have people all the time that bought a car from us, but goes elswhere for service to save a buck. But then they come crawling to us, with an attitude no less, that we owe them something. When Chevy calls to get the facts, I'll give them the facts AND my opinion about the situation. They do take into account how and where the vehicle is maintained, first or second owner, mileage and cost of repair among other things to decide if they will help.
So your "out of warranty with 20,000 miles on it" statement tells me either you didn't talk to your dealer (see #2), didn't call Chevy (see #2, again) or did one or both of these things and got shot down for some reason.

The truth hurts in this instance, hurts GM that is. Bought the Blazer new, had it serviced at the selling dealer, when it started losing coolant I figured out that it was going into the crankcase, no doubter there. Dipstick was steaming, oil looking bad, heater core had air noise in it, lifters were making noise on startup and I could hear faint noise in the engine when running. OK, took it back to the selling/servicing dealer, had them check it and change the oil. They told me flat out "we won't be working on this, take it to another dealer, no need to bring it back here." I asked them if they even looked at the oil, "well no, I guess we didn't."
OK, we took it to a second dealer, they kept it for two days, called us and said it was fixed. Their fix was to add the "cooling system seal tabs" to the radiator. Curious, I went back to the parts department and bought a pack of them. They are in fact "sawdust" of a sort. Ground up nut shells and some other stuff that sounds like kitchen spices. Sealer did work as I said, lasted over a year and 5000 miles, still not leaking but the coolant is looking nasty. Now it's on me. So flame away some more if you like. I'm only stating fact here. We've owned over 40 GM vehicles, our first new one was in 77 (El Camino Classic, great machine too). Won't be another.

I would have filed a very lengthy complaint to the dealership and another against the dealership to 'higher-ups'. Which I had done when they failed to fix a bad head-gasket on a cavalier we bought new, FIVE times replaced. End of that story had that dealership under 'investigation' by the higher-ups, and them paying for the repair that was correctly done at a local shop, After the five failed attempts.
I can say that dealership has improved ten-fold since then. Helps knowing the right people sometimes. But GM in general is in some sad shape.

GM , well Cadillac won the Malcom Baldridge award ( i hope i spelled it right ) which is a real accomplishment AND no other car company is expected EVER to win this award again. Since GM bought Cadillac in 1917, in a way it was GM that won the award. There is a great web site, can not find it now will post when I do or you can google it. It lists all the inovations that Cadillac has contributed since the early teens. Just about EVERYTHING that modern cars have Cadillac has pioneered. They start out with the "first car with interchangeable parts", seems like at one time every car had parts that were machined and fitted that car only, goes through hundreds of inovations.

I have driven a lot of cars . I like Chevrolet for the way they look and drive. I get a feeling from Chevy's like the car has a soul. Other cars I get a cold steel feeling like they were coughed up on some cad program by someone that cares about cars in the aspect of just getting a paycheck for doing it. I also do not have to worring about my Chevy's bursting into flames, then all four tires exploding and the roofing caving in
( because to cut costs extra support was removed ) . Chevrolet does a lot behind the scene ( quitely ) to improve safety with out being told or cover up dfects like other car manufacturers. My last chevy was a 1989 it was 14 years old, still ran good when I traded it in. Only had to replace the ox sensor. My family has always had chevys and will always have chevys. Thats what makes America great you can voice your opinion even if you are TOTALY wrong.

Tom3 i know what you are going through... My father owns a 97 blazer. That thing leaks antifreeze every day. And every time we fix it another leak pops up out of no where. It gets really annoying to stop in the middle of the road cause your engine is overheating because of the leaking.
now to more important stuff
you have to think that chevy isnt the only company that has problems in cars. Look at ford (found on road dead) (fixed or repaired daily) they have the biggest POS cars in the world. Those new 2005 mustangs had deffective engines i heard and they had to recall them. Or how about in the 2001+ ford explorers. you have to take the truck to the dealer to get your oil changed cause there is no dip stick for the oil. Now there is a company that wants to suck up all the money from their customers. Now we know japanese cars suck because lemme ask this question. Do you see japanese or european cars from the 60's-80's on the road? no because they sucked major ballz. Now the american muscle car was the best line of cars ever made on earth. And they didnt have computers like today installed in them. Also if you bought a japanese car or european car to fix them would cost double it does to fix a car made in america (chevy etc etc) because you would have to get that specific part from overseas.

I'm glad GM is reviving rwd plans.
GM reverses course, says revised version of Zeta rear-drive architecture is back on track
Automotive News
9/12/05
DETROIT - Six months after General Motors halted plans to use its Zeta rear-wheel-drive car architecture in North America, the company has revived the program.
In an interview with Automotive News last week, Jim Queen, GM's vice president of global engineering, said a revised version of Zeta is back on track.
Engineered at GM's Holden subsidiary in Australia, Zeta was expected to be the basis of the next-generation Pontiac Grand Prix and GTO; the Chevrolet Impala, Monte Carlo and a new version of the Camaro; and other vehicles. Vehicles in the program were expected to debut as early as 2006.
Queen did not discuss vehicles on the new version of Zeta or timing. Some vehicles that could be in the Zeta program include the next-generation Pontiac GTO as well as a Chevrolet coupe and sedans. They could debut by the 2009 or 2010 model year, say one company source and one industry analyst.
Queen said initial plans for Zeta stretched the architecture beyond its limits for some North American vehicles. "We needed to reassess and reconfigure the program," he said.
"As we started counting who was in and who was out of Zeta, we realized too late" that Zeta would not work in North America, Queen said.
Part of GM's reasoning in slowing Zeta's development was to focus on pulling forward its full-sized SUVs and pickups. GM's next-generation SUVs will debut early next year.
At the time, GM Vice Chairman Robert Lutz wrote on GM's FastLane blog that GM had "canceled & plans to build rear-wheel-drive vehicles off the Zeta architecture."
"But that does not mean we've canceled plans to build rear-drive vehicles altogether," Lutz wrote. "We are simply reallocating resources (human and financial) to pull some other programs ahead and get other vehicles to market sooner."
The revised Zeta program is being developed in GM's Australian engineering center. The vehicle line executive on the program is Gene Stefanyshyn, the former vehicle line executive for GM's Epsilon, or mid-sized cars, in North America.
A GM spokesman said no product plans have been approved and that GM still is studying design themes, performance characteristics and variants for Zeta vehicles.
GM uses the term "architecture" to signify a common set of components, performance characteristics, a common manufacturing process, a range of dimensions and connecting points for key component systems.

I also really like the new aluminum Corvette Z06 which has a hand-built 427.

The new Mustangs also have a lot of frame flex. There are after market companies that make a sort of triangle, box type frame that bolts into the shock towers on either side in the engine compartment, atleast that is my take on where the device would go. Do the ford explorers really do not have an oil dip stick, are you sure it is not the trans dip stick. We also have a 98 malibu that does not have a trans dip stick, you have to check the level under the car like a differential. ...and what would not having a dip stick do with having to take it to the dealer, out side of filling to the correct level....no that can't be, they got to have a dip stick, unless they have a low level warning system, my 2003 Impala has that and sill has a dip stick.

Nope has no dipstick. I was in the shop the other day and we had a ford explorer and we had to give it an oil change for one of the school's teacher (yes this is auto class) and i was like wtf where is the oil dip sitck! i told my shop teacher and he was like wtf also. Then we learned that they had no dipstick and the dealer HAD to change the oil.
we seen the trans dip stick but no oil one.

Hi all, Newbie here. I just bought a 03 Impala LS. I love the car. I have 5 cars. 4 of which don't get driven in the snow or rain. One is a 95 Tahoe and I use it for camping (RVing) actually. The truck is great no problems that I can complain about, great ride, good power, comfy and reliable. i also love my Impala. I have started to get nervous by the previous posts here on this topic about people having issues and hating their cars. I just cannot buy a Toyoter. Wife has one and I know it is super reliable (expensive to maintain, I do the work and the parts are killer $$) but they are not styled the way I like a car to be. The impala has so many neat gadgets. I hope they don't all start failing when it is a few years old. Anyway my point is I love GM, I pray they straighten out there issues and regain strength. I hope this car is reliable cause otherwise it'll be the last one I buy from GM. I usually drive clunkers for a daily driver so I don't have to worry about dents, theft, salt and all that junk. I had a 86 caprice for the last 3 years that cost me $500. That was a super reliable car. I sold it with 169k miles on it. and it was mostly original (new water pump, alt, ball joints) Which is not bad for a big car like that. I miss that car cause noone gave me any crap on the road. So again I love GM and have all GM cars in my garage including a Nova, 2 Chevelles, 1 Grand Prix and the Tah-freakin-Hoe. Love them all. Nice to meet you people. Sorry for ramblin on.

Sound like my twin. Two Camaros that I play with on nice days. Hope the Impala works out, pretty complicated machines. Notice once in a while you turn the key to start and nothing happens for a split second, waiting on the BCM to decide to start the car. Too much technology for a car these days I think. Can't get around it nowadays. Hard to beat the Impala for a nice riding/driving car though.

I have noticed that when you start the car a quick click of the key is all you need and it will crank on its own until it fires. Makes the remote start work better cause I can set a short crank time and it starts perfectly everytime. only time will tell if all this technology will bite me in the rear.

I agree that the jap car lovers have nothing but pure and simple hate for GM and other north american built cars.
They won't even check the statistics to argue, they'll just plug their ears and scream "lalalalaa" instead of going deeper in the subject.
Not only will the parts be easy and cheap to find, but it wont break so often. When you ear those bad stories like that 3.4imp, it really is that : 1, he doesn't know how to handle a car. 2, he had a bad make and was too $#%@ to change cars or 3, he doesn't even own a Chevy and is just talking shit.
My bet is that he's just talking shit. Hell, I paid my 2001 3.8 impala 3000$ CAD. That dude has "put" about twice the amount in repairs.
He could also be one of those grand ma's who go insane as soon as a check light turns on. Quick get it to the dealer! Don't bother just looking at the engine with a friend, cold beers and replace that 10$ part! lol ;)
P.S: If you are out of warranty nor didn't bought your car there, don't bother going to the dealer. Go to an independant expert. The dealer will most often try to scam you.

Pat, big problem is that after you replace the part, the BCM often has to be reflashed with a dealer only Tech II tool. There's a hundred bucks.
I've never owned anything but GM, probably die before I'd buy Japanese, but you'll drag me kicking and screaming to the dealer for a new one these days.

I have noticed that when you start the car a quick click of the key is all you need and it will crank on its own until it fires. Makes the remote start work better cause I can set a short crank time and it starts perfectly everytime. only time will tell if all this technology will bite me in the rear.
thats the auto start feature built into the cars, its to help reduce starter and igntion parts wear. and like you said, all you need to do it tap it and teh car takes over the rest.

Well i disagree with you about the Ford thing, i never heard about the no dipstick explorer and the recall on the new mustangs. where did you read about that?? A friend of mine owns one and he never heard about that... the Mustangs also comes with 3 completly different Engines, which one of them is no good? all I is that I drove his Mustangs and it is a Great car!
I do agree with you 100% on the japanese cars.. they do suck!
if you count how many old American cars you see on the road and how many older japanese cars you see, the American cars are by far longer lasting!!
I do hope they put those japanese cars for rental or police cars etc.. etc.. I'd like to see the amount of abuse they can take, I guarantee daily problems on them! you will notice a gigantic drop in their sales!
for example everyone knows that Toyota engines suck and very pricy because of the large demand (do a search for Toyota sludge on google etc), I get atleast 1 camry a week (97-01) with engine knock. imagine companies have to shell 1000's of dollars per car to fix them!! no way....
I'm sticking with GM regardless what other say!

Well, as an openly biased ASE certified mechanic(A1 engine repair, A5 brakes), I can tell you that I love my 96 caprice with the police package. I had a 91 police package caprice that I ran into a tree (human error of course, fun but erroneous). Loved that car too. I don't like jap cars, and I hate fords. I worked for Toyota for a short time as a technician, and truth be told they are fine vehicles. But they don't do it for me, and I quit my job there because of questionable dealership ethics.
Now that I work independently out of my own garage, I see a plethora of jap imports for every one or two american cars in for repair. I'm a complete GM fan, but that's only because I have found their products to suit my fancy best. And nothing beats the Gen I chevy small block - which is why I saved the 350 block out of my 91 =)
Bottom line: between chevrolet, cadillac, buick, pontiac, saturn and the others GM sub-companies, it's really hard to find a better vehicle less exotic italian factory race cars.
