coolant spraying engine

We had the serpentine belt go on us, and found a bad idler pulley replaced that and the belt. Car overheated when the belt broke, and power steering is whining. Coolant was still full, but dark in color. Went for a drive and van started overheating again and checked to see that coolant was spraying all over inside and a little rough noise coming from engine.
Does anyone know where to start to figure out this problem?

First thing I would do is to check everywhere to find the source of the coolant leak. It may be a hose, connection ect. and repair it.
With coolant having sprayed around and major overheating, you probably have alot of air in the system.
I would next change the oil and filter, checking the old oil for condition and the presence of any coolant.
Next flush the radiator and replace the coolant with a good 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water.
Leave the radiator cap off so you can keep topping up the coolant and start the engine and let it idle ONLY..NO faster. As the engine warms up and the thermostat starts to open, squeeze the rad hose carefully to try to release any air in the system. Be very careful as the coolant will get hot in a few minutes. Replace the radiator cap and stand back a bit as now the system will start to build up pressure. Check for leaks. Fill resevoir bottle to the proper line.
If you hear ANY odd noises, try to pinpoint them and turn the engine off! Let us know how it turns out.
Edit:
Your power steering is probably whining because when the belt broke, turning the wheel usually blows alot of fluid out the top, it may just be low.
