sohc or dohc

how can i tell whether my 99 sl2 is sohc or a dohc. i heard about the vin numbers mine starts with 1G8ZH

all SL2s have the DOHC engine, its the 8th digit of the vin, 7=DOHC,8=SOHC(95+),9=SOHC(91-94)

To double check in case there has been an engine swap (doubt it...) or even if you didn't have the VIN handy

The quick check is the spark plugs on a SOHC are in the front of the block, DOHC spark plugs are in the middle of the block...
Unless I'm mistaken, which is possible

My 93 DOHC says twin cam on the top of the engine

Well if you really wanna tell just pop the hood and if the valvetrain on top of the engine is about 6 inches wide its SOHC and if its about 12 inches wide its a DOHC.
