My backup light comes on when I put the van in reverse, and stays on for the rest of the time I'm driving. After I've parked and turned off the engine it stays on for about 20 minutes and then it goes off.

I seem to have the same problem with my 2002. Mine will be not consistent, some times it shuts off when I turn the vehicle off and sometimes not. Could it be the backup light switch? The local autozone does not carry the part and then did not know where the part is located. Keep me posted if you find the answer.

Hello
I believe what you are looking for is called the transmission range sensor. This is a box like object on top of the trannie that the shift cable goes to. My thoughts about the lights staying on for 20 mts would be the power saver relay turning the power off to save the battery.
Regards,
Dan

Does sound it could be the TRS switch. Have you tried jiggling it in R and through the gears to see if it will turn off or even react to being moved out of R any?
Does the hand shifter and the gear indicator seem to be working together, in the right position or does the indicator seem to be off? I don't expect taking the wire connector(s) off for inspection, cleaning, etc. will help any, but looking around and so forth wouldn't hurt. Be sure it has electrical connector grease in it.
