Good & Bad tranny?

I have an 84 Sable with a bad tranny. How could I tell if another tranny is good? I've found many tranny's in a wrecking yard and I would like to know how I can tell the difference between a bad tranny and a good tranny. Also, what years of tranny can I put into my 84 Sable with a 3.0 engine?
