ok i bought a 97 sable today that doesnt run... it cranks over and acts like it wants to start but doesnt. it looks like its getting spark but its hard to tell because of the location of the coil packs, also i can hear the fuel pump run so im assuming its in working order. i was wondering if anyone has heard of similiar problems or has any idea for me

ok i checked fuel pressure and when i turn the key on acc it takes a couple seconds for the car to reach 40 psi and when cranking it stays at 40 or a little below

spark, fuel, compression. need all three to go.
check spark at the PLUGS not the coil, sounds like fuel pressure is good but the computer controls injectors, pull a plug and smell for fuel if spark and fuel make it into the cylinder than timming or compression is no good

May be its the starter. I had the similar problem. The engine cranked but failed to start. THen it's stopped cranking and then it stopped making noises at all. THe problem was resolved by buying a starter (about 150$), and getting under the car to replace it

yeah my car wouldn't start one day randomly. Turned out to be the starter motor. Starters can be tricky sometimes and they can get stuck when they're starting to go. I shifted my car into neutral and pushed it into the garage and then try to start it and it worked, guessing the rolling of the tires dislodged it, so i drove it right to get a new one. I've also heard many cases where banging on the starter got it going again.
