Ok... so i started getting about 29 mpg in my mom's 1996 SL1, where as it used to be 35-40 depending on how i decide to drive. i am stumped and the car is just as responsive as before and the fuel type is the same, anyone got any ideads?

as cars get older the carbon buildup increases which can hurt gas mileage. make sure the oil is clean as well as the coolant and tranny oil. and if you have any sort of mechanics skills i'm sure you could take off the throttle body and clean that out too. make sure the air filter is clean and make sure you dont have any holes in your exhaust system... any of those things could hurt gas mpg

keeping a car in tune is a simple but large part of the gas mileage. filters, tire pressure, plugs, wires all cause a negitive affect on gas mileage as they wear past their prime. but winter alone also causes a big drop in mileage, a cold running engine uses more fuel then an identical engine at the proper temp. watch the temp gauge, just a hair over half is ideal for saturns. if its not, first replace your ECT, then try the thermostat.

the car is @ 109,xxx miles and i would think that when weather starts to warm up, it would increase. Or it would happen gradually. this is not the case. This happened over the course of about 2 days... it just kept getting worse. (only about 50 miles)

check your thermometer, that can cause fuel efficency problems, also you may have a slow fuel leak, check your driveway. There is a multitude of other things that can cause fuel efficency problems, but those two can happen quickly

no spots on the driveway, and the thermometer is fine.

However i was driving today and i started to get a hesitation in acceleration. expecially under a heavy load (had 5 pple in the car). Seems fine, then it stuters like i just popped the clutch. Just had the gas at normal and it decides to do it... wierd.
