Back a few years I wanted to expand my audio line in my store. I ended up dropping Fuson and Audiobahn because of too many comebacks and their quality wasn't always the same. You could get 6 pairs of subs and they would all behave differently from each other. Heck, some even had metered way differently right out of the box. When building serious systems, you can't have that. You gotta know what you have to work with all the time. Otherwise, you won't get all what you can out of it.

That's insane about the 6 1/2" speakers! And what happened to the perfects? I was looking into getting a set of 12.1s

i still have one the other fried i ripped out the voice coil and the magnet that took a lot of work it was bolted to the frame. made a small box for 2 subs so that one acted like a passive radiator it doesnt sound good but youd be surprised how much bass a dead sub puts out in that set up. Those perfects where the best subs i ever bought they had awsome sound no distortion and i was pushing them with only 150 rms there worth the money. i might have to see if i could get that driceted 300/2 amp ponchonutty. i would say hell yeah but im kind of in the middle of fixing my transmission.

When making a "passive radiator" you have to be carefull how you build the enclosure. The easiest is to have the working sub on one side and the dead one on the other. The reason is the dead sub will radiate some frequencies from the working sub. The problem is that it will be 180 degrees out of phase which will cause the system to cancel out frequencies. When this happens, you loose the whole idea for doing it.

Years ago there were home stereo companies doing this alot. I never saw it applied to car stereo though.

No problem!

Again, I've never seen it used in car audio but in theory, it should work well.

Infinity has a sub called the basslink it uses a 10" sub and a pasive radiator.
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-eSqx0sI0SSy/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=51000&I=108BASSLIN&search=basslink

they have another one with 1-10" sub a 2 10" passive radiators for hatchbacks and suv's.
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-eSqx0sI0SSy/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=51000&I=108BASSLT&search=basslink

and kenwood has one called the wOOx this is the setup i had but with 2 12"s
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-eSqx0sI0SSy/cgi-bin/prodview.asp?i=113WA62RC&g=51000&search=kenwood

theres some other companies using the pasive radiator design but i cant remember the brands.
It was a temporary solution for the dead sub im trying to build a snail shell type enclosure. Ive been building enclosures for over 2 years and no one has had any problems with them as far as frequency and bass reproduction but the snail shell is a pain in the ass.

Would you say it is hard to make one of these box for a set of 12"?

pimprolla112
02-01-2005, 09:02 PM
are you talking about the passive radiator if so it would be a normal sealed box but with one sub with power and the dead sub on the other side. Unless you want to do one like the basslink which would be one on the front side and then another facing the other way directly behind it. Your better off just putting 2 12"s both powered in a dual chamber box with the passive radiator you can get a lot of distortion and your bass frequency wont sound right.

Never actually listened to a fusion ive heard some people say they sound fucking awsome but havent had a chance to hear them.

i haven't heard them either. however, when we were at C.E.S. we stopped by their booth. apparently they are out of new zeland. i asked the guy "so if i ask my friend's in NZ if they heard of you, do you think they will say yes?" his reply was "i should hope so"

i say put that to the test and ask somebody from NZ

Jetts

so, just picked up my other two 12's tonight :D
will have four matching 12's now :D next is a 1200 watt, 2 channel amp that i will be running at 1 ohm which makes 1000 watts rms :) this is gonna be fucking mint :D

as soon as i got everything, were gonna start working on the box, hope to have it built and carpeted in one day and up and running :D

If your gonna build one box for all four subs you should try to make each sub there own chamber. With that much power they should pound il admit i dont like them but for the price they do fucking hit. What brand amp you looking at as long as its not a cheap one it should hit so fucking hard. Good luck with the box.

You guys all crack me up. 4 12's in a civic. LMFAO more is not allways better. I have one solobaric 12" with a 600 watt amp. and I had a crappy deck I still hit a 138.6db. Im sure with my current deck and my new pre amp I could hit low 140s. It is way to much bass to listen to. I agree that you can buy just a couple spearkers and make them sound amazing.

Tony
02-05-2005, 05:33 AM
You should be about 143 db...just taking a guess cjz. I mean my system with 2 12" w0's and a little 120 watt amp hit 140.8 db. Im sure your 600 watt amp and 12 can hit atleast 143-145. And that is about as much bass as I would really want in a car. But I think Derek is gonna try to bring home some big trophies.

02-05-2005, 08:04 AM
yea
when i did a comp last year, i was running my old ass rockfords with a 250 watt amp, and i hit 131.3 db

the amp i'm getting is worth 900 bucks, its been re-furbished and is selling for 190 bucks :)

and yes, they are all going to be a separate box but will look like 1

cjz, my buddy whos designing my box had 4 12's in an extended cab s-10, and u couldnt sit in the thing, when he had just 2 12's it was fine. so sometimes.. more is better

Yeah 4 12's will be some good bass. When I get my new car (hopefully a rex) I plan on putting a 18 and two 12's or 10's in the back.

Keep us posted. I am interested to see what kind or numbers you can hit.

18 inch speaker? holeh...but i do agree just to listen to regular music 1 or 2 subs will do, but for competition 3-4 subs will friggin rock the car to pieces :)

Tony

4 subs- BE PREPARED!!! You are going to find every panel that doesn't have any support behind it or bolted down. Rattles from hell, especially your roof. Kinda fun putting model cars up there though, lol

There is a place here called Sound on Wheels and they have a rex with 16 JL 10's in it pushing 2600 RMS watts I believe. Well of course they blew all the back windows so they replaced them with lexan. Well then the roof started to warp so they had to use wench straps to keep the roof from bowing.
