Problem shifting out of park

I seem to be having a problem shifting out of park. I can push the button in, but it just won't move; I know that in the past I have had to push on the brakes or turn the wheel, but I tried both of those and it hasn't helped at all.
This problem is quite recent. Like 3 days ago I got my car back from the mechanic as the starter had to be replaced. Then last night I was going to go drive it around just because I have to start it every day or 3 as it's so damn cold. However, it wouldn't shift. Today it wouldn't start the first two times, I believe because it's like -20 degrees outside, but it recently started and ran fine, but it still won't move.
Does anyone have any suggestions or know of any previous cases in which this was the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Patrick

Ok, I fixed it actually. I just got a long stick and stuck it underneath those layered pieces of plastic which are in front and behind the stick, and I found a spring or something, which when pushed released the stick and I was then able to shift fine..
