01 impala cooling fans

hey guys i have a 01 impala cooling fans start up as soon as i run engine.this does not allow eng to warm up. temp gauge works ok if i pull cooling fan fuse. whats up sounds like a stuck relay?? found 3 of them. any ideas. thanks i hate to go to the dealer.

cooling fans that stay on seem to be the start of the intake manifold leak that all us impala owners go thru. you probably need a new temp.switch. it's on thermo. housing under throttle body. (3.4 engine)
you should also replace the crappy dexcool with the green radiator fluid.

I am having the same problem with my Impala. I am going to take a look at it this weekend .....Just wondering if you were able to fix the problem. My fan runs for about 5-10 minutes after the engine is turned off. Steve Andrews

It sounds like your temp switch is causing the problem, My will run after the car is off, also the guage won't work when that happens. I haven't replaced the temp switch yet.

I just went through the same problem with my 01 Impala, and its gone (for now) after I reset the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) by pulling the fuse, waiting a minute, and putting it back in. I also disconnected the sensor connector, and checked the voltage coming from the PCM - 5 volts like its supposed to be. Also checked resistance to the sensor cold (should be >5000 ohms), and with engine at operating temp (should drop way down to 300 or so). The PCM fuse is in the top fuse box on the passenger side wheel tower - the cover shows the position inside, along with cover removal instructions. Good luck!

That same problem has been driving me nuts.I changed the temp sending unit again and got the one with new wires.I thought that i was golden but after about 10 days it stopped working again.I just pulled the pcm fuse and ill let you no if that worked.The first time i just let it go and then my cooling fan bearings went from running all the time.So this time im not going to just let it go.

I went to the dealer and bought a new cooling sensor and at another parts store a thermostat and replaced them. Since then the fans no longer run all the time and the gauge works fine. I have since put over 1,500 miles on the car.

I have the same problem on my 01 LS. Tried resetting PCM but it helped for 3 days only. Will buy new thermostat. Which sensor did you replace and where is it located in engine? Also, how difficult is it to replace thermostat and sensor? Any advice appreciated.

The sensor I replaced is the coolant temp sensor and is located below the thermostat housing right where the top hose connects to the block. The sensor is on the front side of the block and I managed to use a wrench and some patience as the exhaust system runs near that and makes for limited space to work in. As for replacing the thermostat, its pretty simple. There are only a couple of bolts on top that secure it. Once you remove those the housing will come right up. The whole process isn't difficult to do and it seems to have fixed the problem.
