need help with starter in 68 impala

Hello, I replaced the starter(tried to) in my 68 because it was pulling so much it killed my new battery. Now I can't get the thing to even engage. I think I have the wires messed up, but I tried the yellow to the S, red to the R, and then flipped them when I got nothing. The lights work and gauge lights come on so I know the battery is working. Can anyone help?

take the starter out and have a auto parts store test it. The selinoid could be bad. They should be able to tell you which wires go where.
