Trying to locate fuel filter for `99 Sable GS...car does not have owner`s manual. Any suggestions? Thanks
Also, does anyone else have excessive fuel consumption issues with the Sable? This is 3.0 V6 engine. Seems to use a lot of fuel...hence, changing out the fuel filter.

How many miles are you getting to the gallon?
Fuel filters don't burn gas. They may cause fuel delivery problems if clogged.
Public libraries have repair manuals available if you are not ready to purchase one.
Follow the fuel lines from the tank to find the filter.
When was the last tune-up? What do the spark plugs look like? Is the air intake clean?

Thank you for your reply. In response to your questions:

>>>How many miles are you getting to the gallon?
I calculated roughly 10 mi./gallon....we drove 40 miles on a full tank...at 40 miles we were under 3/4 tank.

>>>When was the last tune-up? What do the spark plugs look like? Is the air intake clean?

The spark plugs were changed less than 4000 miles ago, they were a bit carboned, but gapped properly. Plug wires are in good condition from plugs to distributor.
I changed the air filter at the same time, the filter showed normal dirt accumulation, nothing clogging the intake...a flashlight and a shop vac picked up nothing.

The vehicle accelerates well, no missing, but changing out the fuel filter won`t hurt. We have had a lot of problems with this car, and from the message board, it seems that Sables don`t have a good history.
I did locate the filter and going to O`Reilly`s shortly to buy a new one.
Thank you again, sir, for your response. Uniontrooper

Carboned spark plugs means the car is running rich.

Using the gas guage is not an accurate way to calculate fuel mileage. Fill the tank, set the tripometer to zero, drive, fill the tank again, and divide the number of miles by the number gallons purchased to fill the tank.
Example:
200 miles = 10 gallons
200/10 miles = 10/10 gallons
20 miles = 1 gallon

After changing the fuel filter, try using a fuel injector cleaner (the parts guy should know a good one) and see if this improves things. Slightly clogged fuel injectors will not allow the fuel to properly atomize.

The air intake can develop a black film causing poor fuel economy. Every tune-up I do on my truck, I have to clean the air intake and butterfly. It looks like a black carbon film coating the inside of the air intake. This will improve the fuel economy on my pick-up.

Think of the fuel use this way. Your car is suppose to get roughly 28 miles per gallon, you say it is getting 10 miles per gallon then where is the other 6.5 tenths of gas going every 28 miles? If it's leaking, you should see it or smell it, if it is not leaking then the car is running very rich so it doesn't perform like it should because it is running rich. In this case their is no in between. Connect a good scanner and check the opertion of the emission and fuel system.

I changed out the spark plugs, replaced fuel filter, ran a half tank of premium gas and injector cleaner thru the engine.....seemed to do the trick. Sables are a bit quirky, I think, because now the heater works properly, also, since doing this. Thanks for all your help, folks. Uniontrooper
