I am rebuilding an '88 CRX Si from the frame up. Recently I've started rebuilding the tranny. What I have is so worn out its amazing the thing went into any gear before I got it (I've never driven it). What I need to know is if there is any way i could possibly come up with a differential - from a '97 Prelude for example - that would help out with the overly simple stock diff. Am I an idiot for thinking something like that?

nope you need a differental from a 88 si only. Im not sure but 89-91 ones might work also!

whats the difference between the stock transmissions that came on this gen. of cars? How can you tell between them?

the transmission has a different number of splines on the input shaft. 88 trannys are different from 89-91!

the input shaft size is different. thats the only difference that matters.

Where would the best place be to find out everything there is to know about these trannys ? And where can you get any of the special tools to work on them ?

i tore down a few of them, i didnt use any special tools. i mean, there may be special tools that allow you to assemble it easier, but i did just fine with hand tools and a feeler gauge

Except for the bearings, you have to use a press, right ?
